OnePlus 8 Unboxing, Demonstration and Review

Hi, this is Andrew for geek news, central and on the desk this afternoon we have the one plus eight. This is one of two phones that one plus are releasing this April we've got the one plus eight here and then there is also the one plus eight pro now I think this will be a very popular phone. I've been a fan of OnePlus for many years, so I'm going to try and review the eight on its own merits, rather than constantly trying to compare it with the eight pro. So if you want to know more low check out my other review of the eight pro so let's get started, I've got the 8 1 plus very kindly sent this to me. I've got a couple of bumper cases and still it's shrink wrap. So let's get it open and see what's inside the box, so just for the US, the I'm just gonna, try not to reveal all the IMEI stuff.

The 8 pro will come in two different configurations. There will be a 12, so this would be an 8 gigabyte version, but that comes with 128, gigs of storage and then there, as you can see here, there's this one here, this glacial green one that will come with the 12, gigs and 256 gigs of storage. It does come in two colors I. Think they're called something like onyx black, and this one here is once we get it open. You'll see is the Glacial green.

There is going to be a third color, but it won't be available in the UK as far as we know at this time- and it's called something like interstellar, blue or something like that, so it's just coming slowly sucking its way out right. So here we have the phone, and these things could always be a bit tricky to get out, so forgive the fumble fingers. So it looks like in the box. Let's just move these out whoops. Let's just move these to one side so looks like in the Box: we've got the phone itself, we've got the charging cable, and we've got the charger itself, so the new charging is called it's called wolf charge, 30, possibly the more charge, 30 TF remember, and it has some pretty impressive charging times.

It's supposed to be able to give take you from favor from naught to 50 in a little over 20 minutes, 22 minutes something it won't when it comes to, and I think we can always already see the turquoise color of the 1+8 I'm, just going to get this off very nice, and I'm, just going to find my fuse on a second I'm. Just going to find my IMEI sticker I, never know how much this is really needed, but it would seem to be good practice. Okay, also, here's the phone itself. What we can see immediately from looking around is we've got a triple camera here. We've got our traditional volume buttons here on the top we got a nice clear, top yeah I do like the color on this.

You know this glacial green really comes across where it comes across. Well don decided, we've got our the famous OnePlus alert slider, so you can swap routine silent and full-on and vibration between got the power button down the bottom. Here we've got what looks to be the USB-C port via speaker perhaps doubles off as a microphone, and then we've also got the SIM tray and as with most OnePlus devices, and if I'll take two Sims, which is itbeing great. If you're doing business and private okay. Well, let's power it up, see what happens yeah.

Let's go little kick there, so there is some charge in it. So it's going to go and start it's going to move the camera in a wee bit here, so we can see things a little better, so just to go through a few details of the phone. So this is a six point. Five five-inch screen and as 1 + talks about it, they talked about their fluid display. It does now have the 90 Hertz refresh rate, so you get a bit of rhythm reflection there, and you know we're not going to be able to see that, given the way that I'm recording us, and you're watching it, perhaps on your phone, but I will try and highlight why we see that that fluidity in a fast refresh light great.

You can also see we've got a front-facing camera here, and it is now a what do they call it having a blank, but it's instead of having either the teardrop that we might have seen on the certainly on the 60 series or the pop-up of the 70 Pro or the pro last time around. We now have a cutout camera. I really must try, remember the proper name for these things, so the screen that has perfect color accuracy and some of you might have seen some of the reviews that I think probably the pro got, but even so the ten point, nine inches. Sorry, ten point: nine aspect ratio has a fantastic, perfect, color accuracy, perfect gamut and all those good things, and then they talked about I. Think all the JNA CD I cannot remember what the J and C news, but it's around point four.

So it really means that the color accuracy is great fantastic. Reproduction I did mention briefly that inside we've got the one has the 12 gigs there is the eight gigs as well. Other bits that are inside are obviously the Qualcomm processor. It uses the four remember the 865 year. So it's got the 865 processor inside, which will be pretty nippy for most things and then, if we just take a quick look at the cameras around the back whoops as he nearly drops it and say, we've got this.

This triple camera system, which I think you can yeah there you go. That's probably better. You can kind of see the three cameras and what we've basically got around the back here is that we've got a megabit. Sorry, we've got a 16 megapixel ultra-wide camera up here. We've got a 48, megapixel main camera, and then we've got a macro camera down here for those close-up shots, so all of them use the main camera has the electronic and or the optical image stabilization, and it uses one of the Sony imaging centers sensors are think it's the 48 megapixel one is the AMX five, eight six, which sounds very impressive.

Frankly, I'm, not a pro at these things, but it if it think it shares the same image processor with the pro. So we should be getting some pretty decent, pretty innocent pictures out of this the wide angled it uses the say, a 16 megapixel and has a feel like an angle of 116 degrees, which is pretty impressive. Basically, the macro has lets you take stuff close up, and it has an f-stop to wait for, so we should be able to get a nice close up pictures of beetles and the plants and things for that I'm. Trying to think what else there is to mention at this point, because probably what I need to do is get this get signed in to this. Get it loaded up with my settings, and then we'll talk a little perhaps about the wireless connectivity.

Okay, well, look I'll be back after I've signed in, and we be able to see what this can do thanks for watching, okay, so the phones just continue to set up there's a few other things. We can have a look at us, that's doing that so inside the box. Here we've got a bit of bumps and stuff. Shall we say: okay, so there's a Quick, Start Guide there's a bit about SAR values? We also have what we have a set of stickers. It's all good fun, sort of information on EU contacts, invitation letter, which just says thanks very much for a month, I've seen it in the 1+8 Pro so yeah.

It says thanks so much for buying one + and greatly remember the community and all those kinds of things and down the bottom. We've got a pin for the SIM tray, so just to show you how that works MCA before you obviously just push that in here, and they pop out there we go and, as I mentioned before, the 1+8 will take two symbols, and you can kind of see that it does it rather than doing it perhaps by side which you might have seen on previous one plus. Are you actually kind of get them back to back, so you clip them in, so you can see that, so I'll just pop that back in here, not exciting. Oh, there we go so look it's just carrying on here. Just go for that one for a change.

You know, I'm, not really a gesture person, that's good! That right believe that too. Okay. So now, that's my background has copied over information from the form one of my backups in the Google cloud. So it's doing all of that nicely. So one of the features that we've got actually in the new oxygen OS version is this idea and I dynamic backgrounds, and they are pretty impressive.

Actually, so it's just! Let's just go into settings and set one of those because they are a new feature, and they are quite impressive. So here's wallpapers, and we want here's one of these new dynamic wallpapers, and what happens is that as you do things this lot of other customization? But let's go back to the wallpaper, as you do things that wallpaper morphs see how it changes their pronounced, get reflection, and it doesn't when you turn it off, if I turn it off at any micro game, see it swishes in do it again, it's pretty impressive. He looks I'm, not sure how well actually comes across in the video, but it looks perfect in real life. Okay and just watch. That's doing that.

We also had donen't get chance to look at is the two new colors. So we've got one that's in a sandstone bumper case, which was obviously designed to complement the Glacial green or Glacial green, glacial, green okay. Here we go here and yet it does have a rough texture to it. So it's going to be a bit more, it all drippy, then perhaps the rough back here. So let's just pop that in there so just gonna slip in here.

Hopefully that's it yeah well, I went certainly the Glacial green, the lovely glass back is it looks great, but I guess for practicality. You're always going to want to have a cover of some kind, like my wife actually just dropped her tablet the other day, and she dropped her from some hope that fortunately just went it was in a case. Flo fell flat on its back and then bounced out of the case, but it was fortunate unharmed, which was very lucky. Okay, so this is chunking away, can also see. We've got a new a system update for oxygen OS, so I'm just going to get it to download the start.

Whilst it's doing everything as well, let's have a look at the nylon bumper case. Okay, that's quite nice is kind of firm. It's like a fabric e texture to it got the one past logo there and yes, it's kind of a yeah. It's definitely different feel it's not sandstone. Furthermore, it's not the Kevlar of some other cases.

Furthermore, it's actually a kind of cloth. Texture I quite like that yep good. Okay, whilst that's still downloading. Let's talk a little about right here. Let's just talk a little about bit connectivity, so one plus has gone all-in on 5g, so this phone.

That one, though, has eventually all the phones in that one plus eight series have 5g connectivity now out here in sticks, well, the suburbs of Belfast. There is no five T, but it's clearly something which is coming and will be available over the next year or so. So it's always one plus is future proofing you for something that you don't have at the minute and in the same way, you've got Wi-Fi six in this, which gives some pretty high data transfer rates. Again, you need to have the hardware to support Wi-Fi six, so if your router doesn't currently do, do it you're not going to see any benefit? Of course, you know the on plus eight supports. You know the Wi-Fi on both the 2.4 and the 5 gigahertz frequencies, so it'll be pretty nippy at home or out and about regardless Wi-Fi 6 does bring a number of benefits, particularly for where you're, using your phone in something like Ana radiant, an arena or football stadium where there are lots of people trying to get onto the Wi-Fi at the same times as you are. Okay, well, look that unless let this load up all my apps and do something it updates the new version of the operating system, oxygen, OS and then will maybe have a look at charging and power, and things like that and it and for those we've launched it.

It does have a battery capacity or more. Let me just check that I think it's four thousand three hundred milliampere hours and which is pretty beefy so should keep you going for a while, but we'll talk about that more in a little. Okay, back soon, the new one plus eight comes with a 4300 mill ampere hour battery, which is pretty beefy. It's about thirteen percent more than the battery was in the OnePlus 70, but even the biggest battery will eventually need to be charged, and this is where the walk charge 30t comes into play. What charge is one plus is quick charge fast charge supercharge whatever you want to call it, but effectively it's their way of charging phones quickly.

In particular, they say: that's. You can get a fifty percent boost in capacity with our just about twenty-two or twenty-three twenty-two minutes, twenty-two minutes of charging. So what we're going to do is we're going to check the time. We've currently got nine percent on the battery here, and then we're going to kick off a kick off a charge with the USB see. What's going to come back again, so we're just really looking over for this ? there we go just check over to 1907.

So let's pop that in here, and it's charging hopefully yeah up here the little things sorry I've been painting, you can see the little sort of lightning bolt or electric sparks come on, and it's charging away swirly. What we're looking for is that when we come back hit around and nineteen thirty-one of us is right, we're looking for fingers just got off my percent attempts and really we're looking for a figure around 59 or 60 percent. Okay, so look I'm not going to make you wait, 20 minutes! So, lets uh, let's come back in the wall. Okay, well, I'm, afraid I kind of blew it in that's I, wasn't quite back here on time and that's actually had two of two extra minutes over what we were expecting. So if your engine imagine originally, we had 10%, and we're now actually at statistics just going over just 67%.

So it's actually got up an extra 57 percent in game. If I remember our timing right and an extra, you know 25 minutes this time, 26 minutes, so I think we can be pretty confident that the claims that OnePlus are making are actually correct, and you do get all pretty much that 50% I can't prove it obviously was I screwed it up, but I think they will read a confident. We do get that 50% charge in 20 to 23 minutes. Pretty impressive. Other things to talk about here is that the new oxygen OS in the 1 plus 8 it has what this calls battery optimization, optimized charging I think we've learned over time that batteries don't perform their best in terms of longevity, if they're constantly charged to 100%.

So what the option OS tries to do is that it uses your work patterns to estimate when it needs to start charging in order for you to have that one at 100% charge when you need it. So for the sake of argument, if you start work at 7 o'clock, and it takes you know, based on estimates, it's going to take about an hour for it to reach that 100%, it's going to start charging at 6:00 in the morning or thereabouts. Now you can turn that feature off if you need to, if you know that you say you're going to be catching a flight at 3 in the morning, and you want the phone fully charged before you go, you can turn that feature off so that you're fully charged for getting to the airport, so I think that's quite impressive. We looked at the charging, and it's continued to show rapidly charge here. I would say, based on some experience with the 1 plus 8 Pro you're, pretty much going to get a full charge in and a little over an hour.

Okay, we'll be back soon for more Thanks hi. This is Andrew and just before I clean up the phone for the final review. I just wanted to point out a little issue that I've been having with the 1+8, and that is really that it seems to collect an awful lot of dust. I. Don't think you just see it here! I'm, try not to get too much reflection, but there's a bit of dust here and there's quite a bit of dust up here as well, and what I've come to find is that I suspect it's probably the screen protector is that it does seem to attract a lot of this, this very fine dust, and it seems to only affect the 8 and not the 8 Pro.

So it's just something to be aware off and yes, I'm sure over time, probably different screen protectors will or come out any be able to peel this one off and put a new one on, but it has been kind of bugging me for the past week or so that I've been having the eight for review. So I look I, just thought: I'd mention that you can make up your own mind whether it is a big deal or not back soon hi. This is Andrew for geek news, central, and we're back with the one plus eight after about a week of using it. I've been quite impressed with the phone. Its performance is great.

It has an fantastic look, there's very little not to like, as I've mentioned, perhaps in a previous segment. The only issue that I have had is with dust collecting on screen, but I've, given it a good clean for this review, so all should be well in terms of performance. The Snapdragon is a fantastic processor. This is really quick and I've been wishing you, savers x-plane here in this Call of Duty, will see the, but just to look at how quickly the screen and I mean. Obviously there yeah.

You know the ninety Hertz refresh here helps a great deal, but it is just really, really nippy. Now there is the strange thing that I have noticed is that the photos actually look at the history in here is that the one plus eight seems to be helped to perform the 1 plus 8 pro I have no idea what's going on here, but if you look at all of these all of these single course, typically around 9:15 9 12 there, and they're multi-core is usually there's a 3 3 3 3, three, six, one, three, three, nine five! You know it's in that sort of ballpark, but I happen to have the eight pro here anything oops and if I go back to I came to the history on it. You can kind of see that it's single course scores are in the range of about 900, 894 and again the multi-core. So typically in the kind of three slate you know three, three, three hundred and thirty s and I have no explanation as to why this is the case, but I thought I just mentioned it on paper. The pro should be the faster device.

I saw it, but I'm no expert in benchmarks and that kind of stuff. So it's hard to say, what's going on games, do run really well on me on the eight, so I shall slot in and something the video in. Just a second playing explain and a bit of nothing. I've done a bit of called. You know, Call of Duty, so you can have a look at that: I'm, not perfect at either at first.

So don't expect too much okay. So here's a bit of Call of Duty and don't worry I'm completely, so this, and they're all my team, so I wouldn't shoot them, but anyway, hopefully you get the idea of I forgot. I should do anything big, wait and shoot somebody! Oh no I, can't, so I'm useless anyway. Hopefully you get some idea of the smoothness, hopefully the 1+8 anyway. I think that's enough for me being embarrassed okay, so this is X plane.

It's a flight. Simulator title, oh and we'll just have a wee look at it. Just to give you an idea of the capabilities of the 8 1 + 8, so ? need to pay attention a little here. So hopefully a bit of speed to get us off the ground yeah. Here we go we're just up on the way and does solar if you've never seen it before the flight simulator, you get lots of different views.

If I show you a little plane taking off, you see the airport, there exterior view used to get her summer, usually there's a hero view where it's kind of here it is there we go. Oh, just looking quite see it, but it's the little plane there. So it's quite like that's happening it, and it works really, really well with the two one plus eight we're going to crash in it. So, let's get out before I do oh, there crashed the display is lovely and there are some nice some great features. If you look I'll just turn the phone off and turn it back on again, you do get this lovely dynamic background in going on in the background and watching Netflix or whatever your service provider of choices, everything looks perfect.

Colors excellent. The brightness is great, and I know that the pro is potentially a little brighter, but on a day-to-day basis, there are no problems at all, you're, never going to notice the difference. The look as I say: we've got the lovely green. The color can change depending on how what light conditions you're under, and you've got this lovely glacial green. On the back, it's fantastic now there are a range of cases, I think I just run through those again, and this is actually obviously a case from the pro with the extra copper cut out.

But there's this carbon fiber effect, one there's this nylon bumper case and then there's the one's the throwback to the early days of one plus with these sounds don't finish, and it goes quiet. It goes well with the background, if you're wanting to keep a roughly the same as the phone itself there as I think I, said an introduction. This is a glass background, so glass back I say you just need to be really careful about what you do price. Why is the bumper cases of the sandstone ones, I? Think of 2295, a plus GB pounds, and you've got the nylon one? It's around 27 or 28 pounds, 27 95 and then the carbon one is actually pricing, offer 3695! So take your pick and choose whatever you what you want. You definitely do need a case, if only just to stop the lens.

The bump of the lens scraping on the desk or whatever it is so there's a couple of features we can also talk about, and the phone is, how she'll say: digital assistant economical, so that either, if you prefer, if you in the Google house, when you hold down the power button, you get the Google Assistant or, as you saw there, you get the hours on a lexer assistant. Charging is fantastic, and you really do get a time that OnePlus suggests or think is about you, and then you'll get a 50% charge in around 20 to 23 minutes again, I had a read demo of that. I have to go, missed the end of it. I had, but it is it press. It has begun to change my behavior in there, so I'm less worried about getting the phone plugged in and charged up overnight, knowing that with in it was a free, short period time.

I can get it boosted up. So that probably a few it's great and absolutely no worries at all and though the warped charge is just so quick, fantastic in terms of the cameras. I'm, not a massive photographer. Probably the technology in the camera outweighs my skill as a operator, and you know if you go on to my review at King, Central you'll see three photographs taken different positions through the garden that really shows what the camera can't capture I've been pretty impressed at the photos, the reproductions good to color us what I expect the color to be, and I had safer and your average person in the street it's kind of hard to fold the camera. As with all these things up in the night, the low vision stuff, it's not perfect, but it's pretty impressive.

You can definitely see or more with the camera than you can with the human eye. So from that point of view, it's good it's fairly good. What else oh I mean it asked. You know s, I mean it's always got when you've seen the little swirls there is I mean is it is just you know, a very light skin on it. Lots of features you if you'd want to try out so first go to settings.

You've got your own customizations, so you can choose the phrase. Wallpapers you see in the diner wallpaper there you can also choose whatever your choice to choose. You know you can choose your theme whether you want a light theme, whether you want a dark theme or go dark, so we, so I've never been a big dark fan, but I've had been quite impressed. I could I could almost go over to the dark side as they say and other features I, don't know where this I'm not to go, so I'm, not sure whether this is a one plus feature, and this is an Android 10 feature, but you do have this dual network acceleration where the phone can use both Wi-Fi and the forgot to say the 3G signal at the 5g signal when they're available, so you go even faster, as they say, I mean other things that I can like about on plus and launcher is you've got your hidden space over to the side, so normally the scrolling is up and down- and you know nothing, nothing happening here, but it was a quick flick over to the side. You can potentially have some simple hidden applications in there.

Maybe your you know if you're thinking of your banking applications and stuff like that, it's quite a neat little trick. There are other ways of accessing your firm Acid yeah. You do a and like a pinch to zoom, and that gets you into your hidden spaces as well aim, but I just really think what else there is to say I mean it is a lovely phone. There's, no doubt about it and I do like the swallow. You can see, someone games are played galaxy or far quite like that, and I'm doing a review for somebody else as well, but that's it, so I mean in summary, this is.

It is a perfect phone, and you know it's always going to be up in with comparison against the eight pro and so in terms of pricing. Just get backlogs, and you can see the really how quickly the thumbprint sensor is. Is there or the fingerprint sensor? Is there just straight in so in terms of pricing, the one plus eight on it's, the eight gigabyte, 128 gigabytes, ROM professional storage version, that's coming in at just a pound under 600 pounds. So it's $5.99 and that will be available from the 21st of April. In fact, all the all the foam author, the one plus eight phones, will be available for the 21st of April.

There has been some pre-orders, but the 21st of April is the main date this particular version, which is the 12 gigabyte version that comes with 256 gigs of storage. It's an extra hundred quid at 699 for comparison, the eight probe doesn't start until $7.99 and that's against the 8 gig ram, only 28, gig storage and then, if you're going to go all paid up for the 12th gig pro version. That's going to be $8.99, so just a hunt just over a hundred pounds less than a grand. So it is I mean let's not quibble. Both the phones are expensive.

They'd pay pro is awfully more expensive than the eight, and, if you want your wireless charging, you're going to have to stop. Have another 69 quid for the wireless charger, so you're not really looking at much charge change out of a thousand pounds personally, I'd, probably going with the 8 600 pounds gets your normal phone, and it is a bit more expensive than last year's 70, but it's 200 quid cheaper than the pro, and you're getting your phone. That is as fast as the probe, so my inclination would be to fork out for this one and pocket is, the 200 pounds. It was some somebody else, everything so reviews look. This is a hundred forty new central I think that's going to pretty much wrap it up, and thanks to one plus for providing the eight and the 8 pro for review.

But for now that's it, thanks going by.
