Hey guys it is Peggy Dean, and I am going to talk about whether the new iPad Pro is worth the upgrade or not. As you may have noticed, the new iPad Pro launched and the Internet is once again exploding. There are some obvious changes and some not so obvious changes to the new model, and the big question here is: is it worth upgrading, so I picked up the new iPad Pro 3rd generation about a week after its well couple days after its release? It's been a little over a week. Now it was released on November 7th after messing around with it for a little I'm going to show you the features that stand out and the subtle changes that you may benefit from, but I'm also going to be candid on whether I think it's worth the upgrade. A little disclaimer I feel that it's always coming down to your personal preference and your workflow, and what matters to you most when you're using your technology but as usual, Apple's innovative technology continues to push the boundaries. So the capabilities of what the iPad can do is more advanced now than ever before, as you will continue to always see with this company.
So, as you can see, the first change is clearly the most obvious. The iPad Pro looks and different. So this is the iPad Pro 3rd generation 12 point 9 inches. This is the iPad Pro second generation 12 point 9 inches, so they are the same size only they are not the same size as you can see, this body is significantly smaller, and that is because they took away this thick bezel around the edges. So now you have an edge to edge LCD, liquid Retina display with white color and true tone.
It has a quarter million more pixels than the second generation iPad Pro. So the other part about this is that the edges they are curved. On the day, they're curved on the iPad Pro second generation on the new iPad Pro. We actually have some flat edges with rounded corners. Now this is actually a thinner iPad.
Now it's down to five point: nine millimeters. So, although it seems a little wiki, because this has curved edges- it's actually thinner now- and it is a little lighter to put size in perspective. The 10.5-inch iPad is now an 11-inch display, but it has the same body size, so it got more screen for the body size. The 12.9 is now a same display, but a smaller body. So it's approximately the size of an 8 and a half by 11 pieces of paper.
Overall, it's 25 percent, less volume when it loses the edges and the thickness than the previous guy. As you probably notice, there is no more home button, so you now swipe up from the bottom of the screen and face ID replaces your touch ID so, rather than using your touch ID to unlock your iPad you're, going to use face ID, as you can see, it's prompting me for my face, or I can enter my password, but the face ID works very quickly. As you can see the face ID, it can be used in both portrait and landscape modes because they took away the home button. Although you do see a little camera here, there are actually built-in sensors inside the screen, so you can actually use it. I'm going to go totally on the opposite side.
Landscape and I want to open this up, and it's still gonna. Let me it unlocked it that quickly. So, basically, any side of this iPad is right-side up depending on how you want to use it. The body color. It is available in silver and Space Gray, so no longer that pretty gold color that we all love so much.
But honestly we throw it in a case anyway. Something very exciting about the difference between these two is that the old iPad Pro it has the Lightning charger, which is the same as the iPhone, the new iPad Pro charges with the USB see. This is the same cord that is used for the new MacBook Pros. It seems that technology is moving more and more in that direction, so we are going to USB across the board. This is exciting for the iPad Pro, because it can now be connected directly to televisions, two cameras, two musical instruments.
It can also be used to charge the iPhone. Now. Let's talk about the guts, the iPad Pro has been reimagined and created with the fastest processors. It is actually 92 percent faster than all portable computers laptops on the market in the last year. So here's what you can find inside this machine.
It has a 12 X Bionic chip that has a neural engine that runs five trillion operations per. Second, basically, I am NOT savvy in this lingo. So what I will say is that it sounds like it's great for multitasking for using large files. It has an 8 core CPU, so it's 35 percent faster than the previous model. If you're, using if you're doing multi-core workloads, it is up to 90 % faster 7, core GPU gives a thousand times faster graphic performance.
The battery life I feel like it's about the same. As far as what I've noticed it's up to 10 hours 9 to 10-hour battery life, the storage level has increased. It's no longer only up to 512. You know you now can shoot up to a terabyte which is like more storage than you're ever gonna. Need on a machine and if you're holding that much on your machine, you should probably get an external drive just in case something happens to you, but no, it does hold a ton of files on their ton of really whatever you want to make.
If you are a videographer. This is great news for you, especially now that you can seamlessly work with the iPad and cameras. So the audio has a four-speaker audio with better surround sound. Now, I'm not going to lie to you. I have not sampled this yet, so I have not listened and don't usually use the iPad for sound for audio with the home button gone.
The controls are the same as the new iPhone 10. If you have that, or some people are calling iPhone X is the iPhone 10, and this will work in both portrait and landscape. So I will show you in landscape. So if I have an app open, I will open a browser, and my home button is gone rather than clicking. My home button, like I, would have before I'm just going to swipe up from the bottom.
It's going to bring up my dock if I swipe up quickly, it will close it as if I'm pressing my home button. If this is open, and I just want to switch apps I can hold it, and then it will hold, drag and hold, and then it'll pull up. My apps here and I can close them just by swiping up, or I can switch to them by selecting it if you're in an app- and you want to just go back and forth between recently used apps, you can swipe along the bottom, and it will do that for you, you can reach the control panel by the atop right corner, just pull down on it. You've got your controls. So now, let's talk about the pencil, the pencil has been completely redesigned.
As you can see, the previous pencil is longer. It is a little thicker, it's heavier and the new one no longer has this cap on the edge. So the charging situation used to be a lightning charger that would plug into the bottom of the iPad Pro, and then it would charge just like this, and then you have this guy, and then you're like oh, am I going to lose it. Where is it? Going to go um. So now the charging with the Apple Pencil to the iPad Pro is very simple.
It's actually just done on the side of the machine. It's got a flat edge, and it just is a magnet. As you can see, it instantly starts charging it so that instantly pairs and instantly charges just doing that and the magnet is pretty strong. So it's not going to go anywhere. This design has really kind of changed the game because, yes, nobody really knows who thought that was a good idea.
You're not gonna, lose any pieces that way anymore. It also has a matte finish now versus the previous model. That has a shiny finish. The tips are exactly the same. So when you do a tip replacement, you just screw off the tip here and put a new one on the inside of this guy is a little more responsive on the new Apple Pencil than the previous one, but the tips are the same.
What I will say, though, is that the new Apple Pencil does not come with a replacement tip like the old one. Did so I thought, hey man, that's not very nice, but they do sell separate replacements and that you can get, and they're not terribly expensive, especially since they last so long. This guy I think I've been using this tip for over a year, so they really don't need to be switched out too often, and I do use this all the time. Something very exciting about the use of the new iPad pencil is. If you were to open notes- and you want to write something hello, and it's not legible, or you want to change it and say something else.
You can just double tap and I. Don't know if you saw that little icon, but I double tapped, and it changes this to an eraser, and then I can just erase what I just did I double tap again, and my pen comes back, and then I can write whatever I want. So this is super convenient to multitask in between, and this is customizable with different apps. You can change it to previously use tool versus the eraser, so you can go back and forth between two tools or back and forth between the pen tool and the eraser of what you're using so like with procreate. If you wanted to customize it between, you know it's basically like undo and redo, but with the tool you're using so pretty convenient.
The other thing that's kind of cool about this is I'm going to completely close the Notes app so that you can see that this is actually effectively working. So if I wanted to wake the iPad and I just press it with my finger, my regular screen comes up, but if I want to wake it with the pencil and I top it instant notes comes up. So it opens the Notes, app and, and I can immediately go into exactly what I want to jot down. Something really, really exciting about the new I had Pro. Is that because of its new technology, and because of the amount of smarts that they've packed into this machine and its abilities, it is now capable of supporting Adobe, Photoshop and guess what Adobe Photoshop is coming to the iPad Pro 2019, which is just around the corner.
If you are an artist who uses Adobe products, you understand what a game-changer this is, and this is the full program on iPad Pro so super exciting. If you want to get more details on that watch, Apple's keynote, the minute mark is an hour and five minutes. So if you just fast-forward to an hour and five minutes, you'll learn all about Adobe Photoshop and how that's going to be supported. You in conclusion, here's what I'll say the price has significantly increased. They start at a thousand now, as the old ones, basically capped around that price and that's for the lowest amount of memory.
I do think the machine itself and what they put into it is so strongly advanced that it would be worth it as an artist. I would say it's worth the upgrade. That said, if you don't plan on using the new apps soon-to-be-released, specifically Photoshop and you're, not using the iPad Pro frequently enough, stick with the older, but still oh so new second-generation. If it's not broken, don't fix it. So I was hesitant to purchase the new model, because I felt that it was unnecessary and part of me still kind of build that way, but as a working artist that does use it every single day.
The upgrade is beneficial to me in my workflow and what I'll be able to accomplish so that alone justifies my purchase. I hope this was helpful, I'd loved it hear what you all think of the new upgrade. If you have gotten it and I am more than happy to answer any additional questions as always and I think that's it for now.
