iPhone 12 Mini vs. Pixel 5: Which Should You Get?

A small portion of this video is sponsored by NordVPN, hey guys, mark here, and these two phones right here are two of my favorite phones that have been released this year, the iPhone 12 mini and the pixel 5. I love both of these phones, but I'm going to break them down in terms of their pros and cons to give you an idea of which one you should buy. This is going to be a hard video to make, though, because I carry the two of them around daily, and I think they're, both perfect phones, nevertheless try. I will first, let's start with the design in that area. These two phones are completely different. The 12 mini has a glass back, that's fairly normal for modern smartphones, whereas the pixel 5 has an aluminum one that has a thin plastic layer on top with a matte finish, there's also a slight texture to the pixel 5.

That gives it a little more of a rough feel in the hand, and it's kind of nice to hold the pixel 5 comes in two colors black and this greenish color. They call sage, the 12 mini, comes in a lot more colors, but I went with the white because it doesn't show fingerprints nearly as badly as some darker colors on a glass phone. I think both of these phones look very clean and modern, but the one thing I don't like is that on my pixel 5 there's a very obvious recycling made in China print that stands out and looks kind awful. This could be a Canada only thing, though, I'm not sure both phones are very comfortable to hold, but while the pixel 5's, rounded corners, are less sharp, the size and weight of the mini makes it the slightly more enjoyable phone to hold. Thankfully, each of these phones are ip68 rated for water and dust resistance, which is always nice for peace of mind.

On the flip side, these phones are also just as different. The 12 mini has a 1080p 5.4 inch OLED display running at 60 hertz. The pixel 5, on the other hand, does have a 1080p OLED 2, but this one is a six-inch running at a 90 hertz refresh rate. The display on the 12 mini is a slightly higher quality one than the one on the pixel 5. The pixel 5's panel tends to rainbow a bit and shift colors off axis, but the larger and higher refresh rate display of the pixel 5 is the one I prefer.

It feels much faster and more fluid than the display on the mini, even though it technically has a worse performing chip in it more on that in just a sec a lot of the time it feels like a much faster phone than the mini because of that display. It also has a very small hole, punch cutout on the top left, instead of the 12 mini's huge notch. That notch does bring a few advantages to the 12 mini over the pixel 5, though, for starters, it enables facial unlocking through face ID, whereas the pixel 5 has no form of face unlock whatsoever. So you have to use the fingerprint reader on the back or a passcode unlock. Now the fingerprint reader on the back is nice and accurate, and it is handy to have around when you're out in public, with a mask on, because face ID does not work in that situation.

The other big benefit of the notch in this case, though, is that apple has ample room to put a good front-facing speaker in here, something that the pixel 5 is seriously lacking. The first time I played a YouTube video on the pixel 5. I thought the speakers were broken. It's that bad google wanted to go with a more bezel-less look for the front display here which hey don't get me wrong, is a great look, but to do so they had to put one of those tiny vibrating speakers under the glass at the top, and it just sounds pretty terrible in comparison to most modern smartphone speakers. I don't listen to music or watch videos through the onboard speakers anyway, so it doesn't matter much to me, but for some of you it could be a dealbreaker.

Alright, my personal favorite portion of a YouTube video camera time on the iPhone 12 mini. There's a 12 megapixel wide. A 12 megapixel ultrawide camera on the back and a 12 megapixel selfie camera on the front. The pixel 5 has a very similar setup with a 12 megapixel wide angle, camera a 16 megapixel ultra-wide and an 8 megapixel camera on the front. Both of these phones are top contenders for the best smartphone cameras on any phone out there.

The pixel 5 photos tend to be on the punchier side, with more contrast and a little more of a cool color tone, whereas the iPhone 12 mini, puts more of an emphasis on faces to brighten them up and shifts it a little warmer in its color tones. The two phones produce sharp images with very few noticeable errors, even in portrait mode shots where they do remarkably well for phones without depth. Sensors. I will say that I do personally prefer the photos from the pixel 5. Most of the time, though, both phones can shoot up to 4k 60fps from the main wide angle camera, but the pixel 5's ultrawide can only shoot.4K 30 and its front facing camera can only do 1080p 30, whereas every camera on the iPhone 12 mini can shoot 4k 60. The difference is most noticeable on that front-facing camera, where the 12 mini kind of just wipes the floor with the pixel before we get into the performance of these two phones.

I just gotta pay some bills and thank the sponsor of this video nordvpn makes it incredibly easy to protect yourself online. It works by securely, creating an encrypted tunnel between your computer and the host that you're accessing, and you can get it by going to NordVPN. org spell or by clicking on the link in the video description. NordVPN actually has many uses. The most obvious one is that it'll protect you, while you're online at home, on your laptop or your desktop, but you can also throw it on your pixel or your iPhone to keep yourself protected while you're out and about on public Wi-Fi.

The primary use is to protect you from getting your personal or even your banking information stolen. But besides that, you can also use it to bypass region, locked content that you otherwise wouldn't be able to access without living in a certain country, because I live in Canada. Hulu isn't normally an option for me, but if I just switch to a US server, Hulu thinks I live in the U. S. , and I can just bypass those restrictions in a few seconds.

It's also really fast and there was no distinguishable difference in speed between using my internet without word and turning on the VPN word is safe. It's got top ratings all the way around, and it's the perfect thing to keep you internet safe, whether you're at home, or away use the link in the video description below or use the promo code spiral to get four months additionally for free when you purchase a two-year plan thanks to NordVPN for sponsoring this video, and now, let's get back to these two phones. The performance between these phones is where we're going to see the biggest differences. This year, Google has opted to try and compete in the more mid-range segment, as opposed to going all out on their flagship to compete with phones. Like Samsung's note series or Apple's iPhone 12 Pro and pro max to do that, google put a snapdragon 765 g in this phone, along with eight gigs of ram and 128 gigabytes of UFS 2.1 storage instead of 3.1. I think this was a great move.

Personally it let them price the phone a lot lower than if they tossed in a snapdragon 865 plus in there, and it has the added benefit of having 5g support for the people that want that feature. All that said, the 765g cannot compete with the new a14 bionic in the iPhone 12 mini in everyday use. The pixel 5 does feel snappy enough, navigating through menus and opening apps, but put them side by side and the iPhone just pulls ahead. You'll also get better gaming performance from the 12 mini and faster load times in bigger apps for most people, the pixel 5 would be absolutely fine. There's no doubt in my mind about that.

Google's pixel launcher is possibly the cleanest version of android out there, and it's fantastic, but the 12 mini is technically the faster phone. However- and I realize that I'm flip-flopping a lot here- but that's just the nature of these two phones- they each have their clear trade-offs. The pixel 5's battery life is much, much better than the 12 mini. The pixel 5 is a bigger phone and, as such, Google was able to put a much bigger battery in it when compared to the 12 mini. The pixel.5 has a 40 80 William hour battery inside nearly double the size of the 22 27 William hour battery inside the 12 mini, and you can probably guess the result of that. While I wouldn't call the 12 mini's battery life terrible, I can still get through a full day with it.

With a little of battery left to spare the pixel 5's battery life is just far superior. I can get a solid two days with this phone easily before I have to recharge, even with the 90 hertz mode, enabled speaking of charging. That's another area where the pixel 5 beats the mini. The pixel 5 comes with an 18 watt, fast charger in the box, whereas the 12 mini comes with nothing except an USB to lightning cable. If you're, considering buying the mini you'll have to factor in the cost of an USB power.

Brick, if you don't have one already, these two phones are wireless charging capable at up to 12 watts, although you'll need the new MagSafe charger to do that with the 12 mini. Otherwise, you only get 7.5 watts on a regular QI charger. So, as you can probably see, this is a hard video for me to make I'm flip-flopping all over the place here. As I mentioned in the beginning of this video, I carry both of these phones around with me every single day. The pixel 5 is my personal phone, and the 12 mini is my work phone and I love them both equally sure they both have their upsides and their downsides, but I don't think I can confidently say that you should buy one over the other, because the two of them are excellent phones with very few dealbreakers.

Of course, each of you have your own preference on whether you like android or iOS more, and you should definitely take that into consideration when making your final purchase decision. There's. One last thing to note here, though, the iPhone 12 mini is definitely the more expensive phone. Google has already had sales on the pixel 5 down to 649, whereas the 12 mini is still holding strong at 729 for the unlocked model and keep in mind you're getting half the storage on the 12 mini. As you are on the pixel 5.64 gigs versus 128, you can get 128 on the mini, but that'll cost you 779 dollars, which at that point is well over a hundred dollars more than the pixel 5. That could be the tipping point for some of you, so that's the pixel 5 and the iPhone 12 mini they're, both excellent phones and, honestly, I wouldn't fault anyone for going one way or the other.

Hopefully this video helped you decide which phone is best for you and if it did, please give this video a like and subscribe to support my channel and, as always, have a great day.
