Apple has refreshed their iPad Pro line with a new set of eleven and twelve inch devices I've been using my iPad Pro for a solid week. Doing everything from video editing photo editing, and basically I haven't even really touched. My iMac, except for a few things that were more I, mean they were more born from laziness than any actual need. But you know laziness is sometimes the mother of innovation. So how has this held up as my only computer for online content creation? Let's find out what's up everyone I'm the everyday bed, and if I can figure it out, you can figure it out. Well, I, don't know what we're going to set it down somewhere right, great, yes, nope! So look straight up, I'm crazy about iPads, I, I, don't know what it is about these devices, but since the first one was released way back in the day.
I've had more of these things, man, how many of I had the answers? A lot I mean I, don't necessarily want to admit how many I have and even personally right now I own for the darn things. Camera controller, this one an iPad non-pro that goes with me everywhere, and then I think I have another mini somewhere in the closet over there, heck they're, just they're, everywhere, they're everywhere and being able to use one to control. This camera is one of the reasons I love them. I say that because I'm, a fully on board already like today before this was released I'm fully on board with the iPad as a computer and if you or not stay tuned anyway, because I'm going to do my best to convince you that I'm right, dude, I'm convincing you I'm convincing you now, this video isn't going to be a list of specs or features about the new iPad Pro 2020. There are plenty of videos out there, and it will be really easy to find one of those.
If you really want to see one I, don't actually care about specs I couldn't care less I care about how this fits into my video production workflow and if it doesn't, then my non-pro iPad that can edit 6k video from a Lu mix s1h, that's more than enough for me. So what we're going to do today is we're. Going to go over the things that I really like the things that I don't and at the event, I, don't know why I was doing that and at the end of this I will give you my recommendation on whether you should purchase one the reason I'm doing this instead of showing you the other side, is there's so much reflection like there's so much reflection, and it's just better. It's always better to show like the matte side of these powerful hybrids. First off, let's start off with the things that I don't like, because as much as I, we already talked.
We already said how much I, love iPads, they're, not perfect, there's a reason: I own an iMac and not just only iPads, so number one in the problem. The biggest problem I have with iPad is a computer replacement. Is the inability to do editing from an external drive when using MacBooks and laptops in general, I prefer to have an external solid-state drive like my Samsung, t5 and I? Have that actually hold all of my RAW files and I keep everything on that drive and only edit from that I only keep the finished product on the actual hard drive of the computer itself. Transfer speeds between computers and solid-state drives anymore they're fast enough that it's generally a very, very smooth process, and it doesn't add too much render time compared to having all of those RAW files straight up on the device. The theme of this video and I guess all of my videos welcome to everyday dad if you've seen any of my videos.
My number one priority and preference is to smooth out friction for my workflow, whether it's autofocus on a camera, whether it's managing my camera from back here, every added step or every added hassle, even those that seem small and insignificant. All of those add up over time and having to transfer over every single file to the internal drive on an iPad is a huge pain in the butt, and it could, it's such a pain in the butt that it could be a deal-breaker for you or for me, as we go along plus a thing that I don't like 1.5, it's half a dislike. It's the file transfer mechanism. When you import either through the photo app or the files' app, you don't get like a status bar or a progress notification bar you just get a little like you just get a little spinning wheel and what a spinning wheel mean. I, don't know what that means.
It could mean everything is fine, or it could mean that it's not working, probably, and it's just wasting all of your time. That's up! There's a big gap between those two I mean I've had several instances over the past week when files wouldn't properly import. The error would say this file doesn't exist, but it clearly exists on the SD card. Now this has come. This has come leaps and bounds since iPadOS heck, even when these were just running on Iowa.
This has come way farther than that, since all of that initially came out, and it does give me hope that this will get better implemented in the future. But do you see how frustrated I am that's how frustrating it is today. The next thing that I don't like is while the mouse support is greatly enhanced and something we are going to talk about more in the positives. You still can't click and drag to select multiple objects. This isn't a problem when you're doing normal day-to-day use like you're typing, whatever it doesn't matter, but when editing sometimes I need to click, drag I need to select more or multiple things, and it's such a pain in the butt that I can't just click and drag click and drag I can't do that to select things and I think why this irritates me a lot by the way but I think that's because it's such a simple thing that I'm so used to like I, have muscle memory from literal years of desktop computers and laptop computers of all flavors and I.
Think that's why I just can't get over I just and that's why I complain about this one. So more! It's a natural muscle memory I have that's being thwarted. You are thwarting me iPad, it's always the things that you are used to the change and that's what really draws your attention. That's, not just I bet life lesson from the everyday dad and the last major complaint I have is while, yes, the iPad can drive some very powerful external monitors. It keeps that to a four by three aspects: ratio.
This suck are I only use widescreen monitors because it's not 1990 anymore with that Andy 386 that my grandma used to have with that gigantic CRT display I really wish the iPad had any options for changing, display characteristics or changing, display, like resolutions or frame size when plugged in some apps do support full screen mode, but not the base device. That's what really need like if the base device could support a widescreen monitor. That would be much better. Those are really the big things. I don't like there.
Of course, there are smaller little walks that I don't like they're more of like nitpick level things lack of input, ports like there's, just the one USB see. Can you even see that the one USB see lack of desktop level? Apps programs I the GarageBand iOS weird thing to complain about right, but it's I, hate, GarageBand, I, call it garbage band iOS. If you record a lot of narration or a lot of vocals kind of worthless great on iMac, not very good yeah, then we have the bad things out of the way. So, let's get to the things that I like because honestly I, like talking about things that I like I, like talking about things that make me happy as opposed to talking about the things that make me grumpy, grumpy, grumpy, gills, grumpy, I, don't like being grumpy, my wife would say otherwise. I say the first thing I like is the speed it's unreal here.
It's unreal, like many I myself, was really skeptical at how Apple initially said how fast the iPad Pro was when it first came out in my head, I just assumed that a tablet I mean it's just a tablet. Look at this thing. Look at this. This could never match even a low-end laptop, because they're physically isn't the space to add high-end components. I've never been more wrong about a subject before this is coming from the camera guy.
That's trying to convince everybody to switch to 30 frames per second, because it's just better because it is the iPad Pro line is one of the fad. These are. This is the fastest computer I've ever used and I. Think it's easy like what I could do right here is I. Could quote some Geek bench scores, I didn't even know it is that what they're called or some other technical achievements, but I'll leave that again.
I'll leave that to others to talk about I, don't care about the numbers. I care about the performance and I have four basic tasks that I use my main creation computer for typing scripts, which heck that Andy 386 from Grandma's house from the early 90s. That was fast enough for doing that. Browsing the internet for research again, my phone does that or this iPad Mini doesn't here's the iPad Mini it does that not a big deal playing the occasional game? Yes, I do have to use a Windows computer to get my fix of half life Alex right now, there's no way around it and fourthly, I do video editing the iPad Pro is absolutely the fastest video editing computer I've ever used or owned, and I currently have a $5,000 iMac Pro. As my production computer right yeah, it's right there yeah it's over there.
It's like the iPad has unlimited capacity to handle whatever you throw at it, because it's optimized differently, and I know. That's gonna. Sounds crazy, unlimited, it's not actually that's hyperbole friend limited, but the lack of those bigger desktop performance drains allows it to like hyper specialize on the specific app slash tasks that you said it to so the other day on Tuesday, when we did the editing video earlier in the week, this iPad Pro rendered a 15-minute one hundred megabits per second video file. That's coming from an all I 4k, thirty frames per second beefy file from my GH five. It had a grade on it, and it had a few transitions effects, and it had one title screen for good measure.
That's that's crazy! Like that's! This is not hyperbole. That's insane! I can't even really describe how amazing that is because, as a regular upload or a video I spend hours, I've spent literal hours, probably days or weeks of my life waiting for videos to render it's the single biggest block of time spent doing nothing in my workflow and being able to crank that down nuts. The other huge block is actually sitting down to edit. All of that footage into a coherent narrative and that's another thing- the speed inside this computer and look I'm just going to call it a computer I'm, not sorry. The speed of this computer for editing is also crazy.
During the edit, like when editing these file sizes of a Windows laptop or even a MacBook of comparable cost, you will either have to spend time rendering optimize media using proxies or you'll just have to deal with stuttering, scrubbing or slowdowns, while editing 4k- and you don't have that here and the reason I focus so much on editing is a task. It's a task. It's very GPU and CPU intensive and the quickest way to find out whether your computer is failing is to try and edit 4k video on it. The iPad Pro has zero problems, crushing this task, this guy, this guy right here, oh don't! Look at all the oh I have to clean the screen. It has zero province, crushing this task.
Something else that I really like more on the ease-of-use side is the new integration with accessories, and it's really what takes this from being as a travel computer that I could use out and about, and this could legitimately replace, not only my laptop but also my desktop. You can connect all manners of streets through Bluetooth now, which does kind of like alleviate my complaint about the ports. I will never stop complaining about ports on there, even though it was in the rougher side of this video I never stopped complaining about ports. It doesn't matter what is problem I've easily gotten, both my Magic Mouse and my magic keyboard to connect, and it's actually wonderful. The Magic Mouse keeps its functionality, so you can side scroll while using it, which if I mean that side scroll like that horizontal scrolling is like 95 percent of the reason that I use a Magic Mouse.
But what I really like about the mouse support is it's like a combination of Mouse and touch controls like you mouse over what you want to interact with, but when you get close it kind of like pre-selects the object it like locks on to the object before you, click on it and I get it that that sounds clunky. But when you start using it, it's noticeable like it is noticeable. When you go back to a regular computer, and you're like no you're, not you're, not like Auto assisting me here, I also the display. Here's gorgeous like it's gorgeous you're, not gonna, be able to see it as well here. But this is a gorgeous display.120 Hertz refresh doesn't mean much to me as a non-tech head, but the vibrancy and the colors of this Retina display when it's not totally smudged up with fingerprints. It looks amazing, I, don't know what I know it display is like a big part of this kind of videos.
I, don't exactly know, I, don't know what else to say about it other than it's beautiful, I'm, not much of a computer person. Another huge improvement is something that you might not have had an issue with, but I use both Panasonic and Sony cameras we're currently using a Panasonic, my overhead camera that we're not using right. Now. It's a Sony, camera and I used to have significant I type that in all caps and scripts. You know how serious it is.
I used to have significant problems, importing Sony files to the iPad I, don't know why there was just something about X, AVC and Apple that they just did not play nice together, but over the last week, I'm happy to report that I've noticed that these problems have pretty much sorted themselves out. You might not know the one problem. The Jacky thing is, you might not see the files to import through the photo app like any other camera. Video codec, like you could on the GH 5 none of the Sony cameras, but you can still import through apps, like Lima fusion, that I use for editing or through the file system. That workflow is not as smooth as a full computer, but it works reliably well enough.
Now that I'm, ok with it. This is now my travel editing laptop. It's just will it switch out? The iMac is still the big question and last but certainly not least well I, guess it is kind of least because I don't actually have it here yet, and it's pretty expensive, but I'm very excited about the new Apple keyboard, with the trackpad built into it. So, basically turning it into like a legitimate, laptop I think this will turn this into a much better. Travel rig always have this keypad cover on it anyway, and I'm, not really the biggest fan of the pencil I have the pencil, but I bought it and I.
Don't know why because I never use it and I, don't really like it that much while I'm typing or working on a document, but here's the real problem and something you might have noticed while watching of all the good things I said of all the amazing things that I said about the iPad Pro 2020, what of those things can be laid solely at the feet at the feet right here of the iPad Pro 2020, none right, none most of these new software updates are coming to the 2018 iPad pros and the internal specs aren't all that different from a day-to-day editing. All of those tasks' perspective really. The only main difference here is the LIDAR camera here. On back, can you see it? There's a LIDAR camera included here, and I'm sure it'll, probably cool for like augmented reality stuff in the future, but man I don't buy a video editing machine to do augmented reality on it. So really the question that this video I tricked you to get you here.
The real question is: should you spend the extra money on the iPad Pro 2020, or should you save some dough and get a refurbished iPad Pro 2018 for far less but get 99% of the same functionality? See we turned it around instead of just being, is the iPad Pro amazing? The answer is yes, it's just which one should you get I think you should get the 2018 I'm a huge proponent of buying used and refurbished gear, because you can get some great deals. You can get better, specs, better storage for the same price and apples. Refurbished policy is basically to treat those devices like their new iPad pros are wonderful, I, love them, and you should get one just get the older one if you are going to be buying one today, I'll link both in the description below I, would recommend the older one, and if you liked this video- and you want to see a little more in depth, information on editing with this little guy click here- click on it, click on the iPad here, we'll click on this beautiful screen and watch me edit and render an entire video on it. Thanks for watching.
