Google Pixel 4a Review

Hey teddy k here for the best buy blog and in this video review we take a look at the Google Pixel 4a. This is the latest mid-range smartphone from Google that comes in at a more affordable price, but plenty of features. The Pixel 4a was supposed to launch as early as may or June of this year, but it didn't perhaps because of code 19 and whatever else was delaying google to finally in September. Is it too late for this phone to come out? No, I would say it isn't because in fact it actually is one of the most compelling phones to come out this year and being a mid-range device. That might surprise you, but it's actually how much it punches above its weight. That makes it what it is.

You might look at it at first glance and be like okay. Well, it's not a pretty phone, but then again few pixel phones ever are it's not. I mean the aesthetics are not really what you're buying this for you're buying it for the performance, which is what really matters and that's where I think it really strives, because it did better than you- and I expect I mean the pixel 4 is a great phone, but it is sort of like it lags because of the battery life like it struggles. Because of that that is not an issue here. So the battery life is largely addressed because you're going to get all day live, and I'll get to that in a second.

But the point is that the some parts are what make this phone, what it is. So what I like is that now you have a 5.8 one-inch AMOLED screen, it's very nice. I mean the bezels are smaller than they were with the Pixel 3a last year. There is no Pixel 3a or sorry 4axl, so this is the only size you're going to get, and it is perfect for one hand to use it's lightweight and again, not the prettiest thing, but it's okay, the whole punch for the front-facing camera there in the corner. I know that could be a little divisive.

I'm not sure everybody will like that, but it's there. Furthermore, I didn't really notice it too much, and I'm not really a selfie guy. So it doesn't really bother me, but the main thing is that you get a bunch of things that I think are nice, so the headphone jack is there in case you want that USB-C is always nice, you don't get wireless charging and there's no water resistance here, which is, of course those are two of the trade-offs that you know. Unfortunately, going to happen uh when you start to lower the price point, but as long as you're protective of the phone, you should be fine, and you can always get a case for it. For that the fingerprint sensor in the back is another one uh.

I've always liked having that uh, you know, especially when you're picking up the phone- and you just want to quickly get in the case is important, like putting a case on the phone is important for that, because the way google made this is that it's a little too flush to the back. So when you have a case on you have that cutout, you just know where the fingerprint sensor is, and it's very easy to get there now. The software is great. I mean stock android. I have android 11 on here.

Furthermore, I don't know if that counts. As one of the three major upgrades that google was uh promising for this device chances are, it probably does, but in any case it works. Well, you don't get the 90 or 120 hertz, refresh rate, unfortunately of the flagship models. It would have been nice to have that. But you know at 60hz it's okay, the phone is still relatively smooth, and it is pretty speedy and fluid because you know just the software.

The hardware work well together now. The what I like also is that some of the features that were in the four are in the 4a, one of which is the screen recorder. App. Sorry, not the screen recorder, the sound recorder app. So this was something that, where you can record someone talking, and it will transcribe it as it's recording the audio.

It was a great feature that was introduced at the time, and it's in here, and it works very, very well. So it's one of those features that in case you need if it's there, and it works offline too. By the way, the camera for any pixel phone is always going to be a major differentiator, but when you're talking about a mid-range phone that shoots like this, then you're talking about a major differentiator, and that's really what this has come down to. I can't think of a mid-range phone that shoots as well as this does it's very consistent, and it is almost on par with the four. You don't get the two lenses in the back, so there is no telephoto lens.

You just get the one you'll get decent results with super resume at two times, but you know I'm not a fan of digital zoom, generally speaking, but at least they're passable they're, decent anything. Beyond that I mean it just gets worse. But the point is that when you, when you're shooting normally, and you get all the modes, you can shoot in portrait night sight. You know google lenses in here, you can save in raw if you're like me, and you want to edit photos and process them manually later. All that is in here and the quality is excellent.

I mean the shadow sliders, the exposure slider, it's all there. Google didn't really leave much out from the camera array or the performance, which is why this is so good. All the software still works here, and the results are fantastic they're, not as great for video. I do wish that google would figure this out. I'm curious to see what they're going to do with their next flagship device, but in this case the exposure's too high.

For some reason I don't know why it just overexposes every single scene, no matter what video I'm shooting, it doesn't make sense to me, but it was doing that a lot, and so I always had to play around with the sliders to compensate for it. But you know it is what it is. So, unfortunately, the pixels uh, you know, there's some room to improve there for sure. On the video side, the battery, as I mentioned earlier, fantastic, it's great- I mean for on pick by pixel standards. I just got to be.

I got to clarify that, because by pixel standards it is very good you're going to go all day with this, probably without any issue, regardless of what kind of multitasking or mixed usage that you're engaged in with this thing, it should last all day without a problem. Furthermore, I didn't have any real battery issues at all. Furthermore, I didn't counter anything, and I was doing quite a bit with this phone. Furthermore, I was you know as a daily driver. Furthermore, I was using it all the time, and it held up quite well better than I even expected: 128 gigs of storage and six gigs of ram.

Furthermore, I think, are also very notable here because they're very good specs for a phone at this range. So it's nice to see now again there's no memory card slot, so that is you know it's either the internal storage and then the cloud you don't have anything in between and it's nice to see that and the 60 gigs of ram actually makes a big difference for how smooth the phone feels when you have multiple apps open at the same time. So it's nice to see that google at least even though they may have taken a couple of things away. They added a couple of things that are still very, very useful and that's my review of the Google Pixel 4a, it's a great phone. If you're looking for a mid-range phone- and you don't want to break the bank, this is one of the best you can find for the best buy blog.

I'm teddy k, thanks for watching.
