Camera Comparison: 2020 iPhone SE vs. iPhone 8 and iPhone 11 Pro

This video is sponsored by disco, Elysium stay tuned until the end of this video for a chance to win a free, download. The 2020 iPhone SE is a solid device overall, especially for the starting price of $399, but there's really one true unknown or enigma about the device and that's the camera. We don't really know for sure exactly what's changed between the iPhone 8 and the SE in terms of the camera and where it might fall. When you compare it to something like the iPhone 11, Pro Max and the iPhone 8, and so in this video we took a few pictures on those devices. We took an iPhone 8 and 11 Pro Max and the new 20/20 iPhone SE, and we wanted to gauge exactly how much of an upgrade this camera might be before we get started, be sure to subscribe and hit the bell to get notifications. Whenever we share a video I do want to note that I only use the 12 megapixel wide-angle lens on the 11 Pro.

For this comparison, in order to better match up the iPhone SE and the iPhone 8's wide-angle 12 megapixel camera on the front of the 8 and the SE, you do have a 7 megapixel, selfie camera, that's capable of taking 1080p video at 30 frames per second, the 11 Pro offers a dual camera setup to give users a wide-angle option if needed and can take video at 4k 60 frames per second, but for this video we just focused on standard point-and-shoot, selfies and videos. Speaking of selfies to me, it looks and fits the profile of what I've been seeing throughout my entire test when using the rear-facing cameras, there's not a huge difference in image quality, but there is a slight difference in color temperature, the iPhone 11 Pro kind of runs a bit cooler than the other two. But overall images look pretty much the same to me here now. Here is the front facing camera on both the iPhone 8 and the iPhone S II. So would love to know your thoughts.

How does everything sound? This is the microphone quality on the 2020s II now switching over to the iPhone 8 yeah. Let me know in the comments down below it looks like things are really overexposed. I know it's really sunny out here. So it's not quite fair but looks like things are really overexposed on the 8 I could be wrong. I'll have to review that, but yeah would love to know your thoughts down in the comments.

I do think. Listening back to that video, the audio quality on the SC and the 11pro sounded much better than the iPhone eight, the iPhone 8 and the SE seem to struggle mightily with exposure and blew out the background. Nearly the entire video, while the iPhone 11 Pro, seemed to manage quite nicely in this scenario. There's a pretty clear separation here with all-around video quality between the 11pro and the SE and iPhone 8. When it comes to still images remember, these are all just straight out of the camera, no editing just no settings adjusted point-and-shoot standard photos with good lighting and, at first glance, you'll, be hard-pressed to find any major flaws or differences.

However, if you look close enough, some consistent factors will start to become apparent for one. The color temperature on the 11pro is still cooler in most cases, photos just look more natural compared to the warmer hue that you get on the 8 and the SE. This is especially evident with this picture here of the sky, where it seems as if all three cameras are just interpreting its own shade of blue the iPhone 8, offering the warmer shade of blue here. Personally, the images from the 11pro just look much more natural sharp, and it just handles things better than the other two phones, but for the most part, the differences are pretty subtle when you have good lighting, even when looking at the iPhone 8 and the SE most of the time, the images look pretty much the same to each other, but you'll notice, a slight increase in sharpness, where some images do come out a little more soft on the iPhone 8. In some cases, the eight really struggles to maintain highlights at a reasonable level and can really over expose light, not sure if it's hardware, software or a combination of both, but the SE seems to be more on the level of the 11pro.

In most cases, when it comes to exposure, portrait mode is tricky here because well, the iPhone 8 doesn't have portrait mode available. So we can really only compare the SE and the 11pro, but I guess that's one good thing that the SE has over the eight in terms of camera, its portrait mode, but aside from color temperature being a slight difference, I think both performed the same. There's a lot of hair here that you can see- and both photos did a good job of separating the background between the subject, aside from a few hair strands, that kind of got left in the background and didn't quite get separated properly on both devices. But again the theme here is: it looks pretty similar impressed with what the SE can do by strictly relying on software here and that a 13 Bionic chip. Unfortunately, the SE and it's software based portraits, can only focus on people and not objects like the 11pro can, which will cut this section short, but I do think the SE is capable of taking some very great portraits of people, and you even have the ability to adjust portrait light settings too, there's also no night mode on either the iPhone 8 or the iPhone SE.

But we did take some pictures in lower lighting conditions traditionally, where the night mode would be on by default on something like the 11 or the 11 probe, just to kind of see what you get in terms of difference. The 8 struggles mightily, which is not a surprise, and in most cases it really has a hard time keeping the subjects in focus, and it just doesn't look good while the iPhone SE does not let in any more light than the iPhone 8 would at least it was able to keep the subject in focus, no matter how hard I tried. In certain cases, the 8 just would not focus properly. Obviously, the 11pro, with night mode on by default during this test, performed like a champ, giving you crisp your images with a lot more light in the shot. Finally, as far as video goes on the rear facing cameras, the iPhone 8 is only capable of taking 4k video at 24 frames per second, and so I naturally set each phone to 4k 24 frames, and it's pretty clear here that the SE and the 11pro do a little of a better job with stabilization over the 8 image.

Quality does look the same, but the difference here and where the advantages lie on the SE and the 11pro is with stability, switching to the SE and 11 Pro and turning things up to 4k 60, really not a whole lot changed here, either image quality and stabilization kind of look the same I'm, not really a hundred percent on this, but maybe there's an edge slightly to the 11pro. But again, this could just be my brain tricking me into thinking that, because the 11pro is the more expensive device, and it's supposed to be the better device so again would love to know your thoughts on everything that we just touched on here. Personally, I. Think the eighth and the SE are a lot closer in camera. Quality than Apple wants us to believe, but it is fair to say, then, in a lot of situations and with the help of better software processing, the iPhone SE can outperform the eight.

It's also fair to conclude that in good lighting conditions, overall, things between all three cameras are pretty much the same aside from color temperature, of course, but the fact that the 11pro offers you more options with portrait mode, night mode, extra lenses like an ultra-wide to capture more people in frame, etc. It's obvious that the 11pro has the better camera system on any iPhone right now, but if you're strictly looking at upgrading to the iPhone SE from something like the iPhone eight aside from getting portrait mode and some slightly better images, there's really not a huge difference between the two, especially in good lighting conditions, again, would love to know all of your thoughts in the comments down below now.
