BlackBerry KEY2 in 2020: What To Expect Moving Forward

Hey everybody welcome back to tech Odyssey, so today, I'm here to talk about the key to a little, so I've had a lot of people that reached out to me quite a few comments where people have been concerned about the longevity of the BlackBerry key to this is the latest greatest last great hope, flagship, BlackBerry device that we have on the radar right now and a lot of people are concerned because the BlackBerry Mobile License Agreement is going to end on August 31st of this year. So what does that mean for this phone and what can we think and hope for this phone right now, so before I get into this video I do want to say if this is your first time stopping by the channel. I appreciate you being here. If you enjoy the video, please hit the like and the subscribe button and the little notification bell. So you can get updates on new videos when they come out now, let's take a look at the bike. Great key ?, all right, so one thing about the BlackBerry key ? is I actually happen to think it's a fairly future-proof device.

Yes, I know it's running a snapdragon 660: it's got six gigabytes of RAM, 64, gigabytes of storage or 128 e to get the international model. That was more money, but it still holds up really well now the biggest heartburn that I had about this phone was because we were expecting to get Android 9, and it just never happened, and that was kind of frustrating because most of you know the Android 9 and then of course, Android 10 gave us all the swipe gestures. So I really thought that one day this was going to be an Android Blackberry. That was very much like blackberry 10, where you could do all the great swiping gestures and the world would have been great. If this could have got to Android.10 I would use this phone for four or five years. If it know, I had updated internals, but that's not the case.

So one thing people worry about is security. Blackberry has always been synonymous with security, so many people have wanted them for secure devices as much as they wanted. A physical keyboard I had some concerns because it had been a really long time. They'd been like December, since there was a security patch, and then they made the announcement they weren't going to make any more phone. They weren't going to support them anymore, so we actually got a March security update patches, so that was really nice.

This whole licensing agreement thing really kind of leaves things in limbo. As of August 31st, they're, saying yeah, that's whenever basically they're done ski. You know, they're gonna still do like two years of like warranty, support and things like that, where they're required by law, whatever. That means that's a whole other conversation, but basically I expect it as of August 31st. We're not going to get anymore.

Software updates on here. We're not going to get any security updates. I, don't expect to see Android 9, so I, just don't think that's in the cards. I do think we'll probably get one more security update, at least before then I would think, probably in August. So give us one more goodwill, security patch to get us on our way out the door.

Now, if you are still using one of these devices, or you were curious about getting one of these devices, here's the thing with blackberry. Blackberry has always been synonymous with productivity with security and, of course, the physical keyboard. If you want to have a phone that you're concerned about being able to play games on all sorts of other things, you might be looking at the wrong phone now, a lot of people, especially people that are in my community and watch. My videos are still using BlackBerry 10 devices. Some people are still using legacy devices.

Some people are using the prints. Um people are using the motion, the DEC devices, we're kind of used to this, not having the latest and greatest phone. But that's okay, because we want the keyboard. We want the efficiency, we don't want weak. Sorry, we want the productivity, and you still get all that with this phone, so yeah.

What I like to have updated, emojis and swipe gestures on my phone? Yes, but Android, 9 and 10 have swipe gestures, but do they have a convenience key? Do they have a speed key? Do they have a touch sensitive capacitive keyboard? No, they don't. So we still have all the core functionality in a blackberry phone that we want. People didn't want to lose the touch sensitive, capacitive keyboard. They have it in the key too. We have a 1080p screen.

You can do all the media, consumption and social media that you want and if you're worried about support, for instance the BlackBerry 10 uses it can run Android, 4.3, they're still, software and manufacturers out there that support Android 4. You can use Spotify I just made a video on how to download WhatsApp, even though you might not be able to send attachments, but there's a lot of stuff that you can still get that will run on Android 4 on BlackBerry 10 devices that are five six years old. So if you're worried about that think about this, yes, the BlackBerry 2 has been out for almost two years and that's okay, because it still runs just as well as it did the day that it came out. I have no issues with this phone at all. You've got the dual cameras on the back.

You got the camera on the front, it's good for duo, it's good for selfies, it's good for pretty much whatever you want. Is it good at low light stuff? No, but how many people that are core blackberry people are really interested in going out there and taking nighttime shots. I'm going to tell you: I have phones that are capable of doing it and I don't do it with them. So it's a perfectly good point to shoot camera. It has the capability to make to do portrait shots, and if you have nice ideal lighting, it can take some surprisingly good pictures.

So, if you're worried about whether you need to get rid of this phone or how it's going to hold up in the future, I would wager to say that this phone will work just as well for another two or three years, and maybe beyond that I mean yeah by time we get to the Year 2023. We're going to be talking about five close to six-year-old hardware. But if you look at the blackberries, we have now granted I think that Blackberry actual BlackBerry 10 devices are built a little better than these, and that's really the only concern I have moving forward. Also, Android is a little more susceptible to security issues than blackberry, 10 blackberries 10 was one encapsulated secure, not to crack that it was just so secure Android, it's a little harder to keep secure and I. Think that's one of the reasons it took them a longer time for us to get updates on our security and our software, and on top of that, do you have all the user interface stuff in here so yeah.

If it were just a generic slab and all they had to do was just push out an update, yeah, we probably would have got more routine stuff, but with the keyboard, the capacitive nature of the touch sensitive features, all the other stuff yeah that might have created some lag time and getting us to the operating system. Updates that we wanted. But you got everything you need right here. So if you want to keep using it, be happy using it. If you want to buy one I think it's still going to be okay for a few years, and I'm not gonna, downplay security, stuff, but I, don't know how big of an issue that really is for a lot of people, because there's a lot of people that are using phones that are one year 2 year, 3 year, 4 year, 5 year, old phones, even in some instances, so I've never had any problems.

Personally, be careful with your phone, be careful with your data. I think that you'll probably be alright now I'm not advocating for a lack of security features, I'm just saying that moving forward, if we don't get software and security updates, I, don't think it's going to be the end of the world. So if you're still using a prig you're still using a detector using one of the key one device, then you haven't had a security update in a while anyway. So this right here as long as the hardware holds up I, think it's going to be good for several more years, and I'm still going to be hanging on to mine. It's not going anywhere still have the physical keyboard.

It's still in my device rotation. Yes, I'm constantly reviewing stuff and I get people that asked me which one you're using right now well, this is my favorite one to use this one or my Black Edition key one I like both of these, but I'm, not always using this every day, because I'm constantly testing out new stuff. So still good. Don't worry, we'll see what happens when we get there now just to address the whole licensing agreement. Ending thing people have been asking me: do I, think there's going to be another BlackBerry device, honestly I, don't know, and I don't want to get my hopes up.

We've been through this with blackberry, 10 we've been through this when they made their Android phone. We've been through this now with the TCL licensing agreement with blackberry mobile. So is it possible that they could find another partner to license? Yes? Is it possible that they could start making their own devices in who knows? I read an article the other day that Fairfax Holdings was possibly looking to buy out blackberry and, of course, Fairfax Holdings poem WATS loves Blackberry phones, you never know, but I'm not going to put any stock into it whatsoever. I'm not gonna, get my hopes up. If something happens, it happens.

The reason I think we haven't heard anything, and this is just because of the nature of licensing agreements. The licensing agreement to TCL is still in full force right now, after it ends on August, 31st I would expect that. Maybe we could hear something after that point. Do I think it'll be September? First, no I. Don't I would say if we don't hear anything within six to twelve months after the licensing agreement ends, it's probably not going to happen.

Does that mean that it can happen later on sure it does it mean it won't happen later on sure you never know, but look at like palm kind of made a resurgence to Nokia made a resurgence. So could we see something later on down the line? Yes, you can't ever rule anything out with technology, because here's the thing the nostalgia factor and somebody willing to take a bet on something and try and bring it back later. It happens a lot. We have all these retro consoles. We have these retro phones.

Furthermore, we have all these new things in crowdfunding and there's just so much stuff out there. That makes life easier when it comes to making something and bring it back so hold on tight. Let's see what happens, don't get your hopes up, and we'll see where it goes, but for right now this is the best of the best in the BlackBerry world, and it's still going to be good for several years. So hang on tight! Now, that's all I've got in this video I know it's a little different from usual, but I really wanted to address some of this stuff because I get so many questions and I have so many people that are worried and the same thing with the key to Ellie. It's got a Snapdragon 6-3 six in it.

It should be perfectly good. Furthermore, it also got the March security update along with this one. So we'll see what happens. Take the wait-and-see approach just enjoy your blackberry, while you have it and keep pounding away on the keys know that you can still use this for a while to come. So that's all I've got if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave them down in the comment section I'll get back with you like I, said in the beginning.
