Hey everybody welcome back to tech odyssey, so today, I'm here to talk about the blackberry, ke2 and its relevancy in 2021. This is the most powerful blackberry on the planet and until we get the new one from onward mobility, the new 5g one sometime in 2021. This is still king of the hill, and I want to talk about the relevancy and how good it is still moving forward, because there was a little of a period of time there where we didn't get any updates for a while. Of course, we know the blackberry. Mobile licensing agreement ended at the end of august 2020, and this phone is over two years old, now running android 8.1. But what I want to talk about in this video is one is there's still any gas left in the tank.
Should you still hold on to this moving forward, and how secure is it? Because you know it's a little older now, so I'm going to talk about all these things, but before we get into that, I do want to say if this is your first time stopping by the channel. I appreciate you being here if you enjoy the video please hit the like and the subscribe button and the little notification bell. If you want updates when new videos come out, let's talk about the key2, so the ke2 has kind of forced its way back into the blackberry spotlight. We kind of thought that things were like looking grim in February of this year, they announced that the licensing agreement with blackberry mobile was going to be ending so or was it march, either way February march? So, looking back at all the things that have happened this year, we know that we now have the licensing agreement with onward mobility and sometime in the first half of 2021 they're, saying they're, going to bring us a brand new android blackberry with 5g and a physical keyboard. That's great, especially since we, this is the best we have right now came out in 2018.
So it's over two years old now and if you know much about the blackberry, mobile phones, if you look at the other ones that are over two years old, I. e. the blackberry motion and the key one, they have not received a security update in over a year. Well, this guy right here over two years old now, and it's like they turned the light switch back on over at blackberry, and it's like their software, guys decided hey. We want to push out some software updates some security patches, so the ke2 has now got a security patch update for like three months in a row October November and December.
It has a December 5th security update on it, which I think is fantastic, and I think, is part of what we have to look forward to moving into 2021. I'm hoping that we continue to see this, but even if not, we at least got one at the end of 2020 here in December, so the phone is as secure as an android phone is going to be at the end of this year moving into next year. What can you expect? Well, it's running a snapdragon 660, six gigabytes of ram 1080p screen 4.5 inch lcd, it's still a very capable phone. Of course, it's running android 8.1 quite dated at this point we're running onto android 11 now starting to roll out in these newer phones, especially like the OnePlus and the Google Pixel phones and even some Samsung phones. Now this is not going to get another android operating system update.
It's not going to see android 9, it's not going to see android 10. ! I am very happy and a little surprised that we're still getting the security patches, but I think that this is part of the long-term strategy. Blackberry knows that they have to keep the phone relevant until the new one comes out. So I fully expect now to kind of see security patches until the new blackberry comes out because they know that people are still using this, and they know that people are still using the key2le. So if you're worried about security, I think we're still okay.
For now- and it's been really nice to see the last three months in a row- we've got these magical security updates, so I think that's going to continue moving forward if you've got the BBF 100-6 model. I don't know why you're not getting security patches. Hopefully that gets addressed at some point in time, but this is the 100-2 model. Its regularly unlocked it's not the dual sim, so this one I haven't, had any problems with it. As far as it's holding up, I mean the phone's two years old now, so you would kind of think well.
Is it going to start degrading? Is it not going to run very well anymore, even two years later, this phone still seems to be running perfectly fine. For me, I've not had any problems there. I know some people have complained about having space bar issues and the fingerprint sensor not working anymore. I have not had that problem, but at least not with this one. Furthermore, I had some issues with an older model.
It was a first generation model, didn't really work all that great this one right here. I've had this one over a year now and yeah, I have not had any problems with it. It seems to still be working just as well as it did on day one and for most of the people. I've talked to. They seem to be happy with it.
The issue that we have is, of course, we never got android 9, that's very frustrating. I would have really liked to have seen that on here. I think that would have helped out a lot, but the snapdragon 660 very capable the screen, everything else. That's a part of it. The keyboard seems to be holding up well, thankfully, the key2 is not plagued with the quality control issues like the key one and some issues with the motion.
So this one seems to be like it's been pretty good again, it's working just fine for me, you still have access to all the latest and greatest apps, you're banking, your social media, your internet, your games, it's still a perfect phone, and it's built. Well, I think so. I don't really have any concerns about this phone moving forward. I think for 2021 it's still going to be very relevant. Furthermore, I think.
Even once the new blackberry comes out, some people may even still choose to hold on to this. You never know blackberry people. Sometimes we like one phone and like to stick with it for a while. Some people will probably still be using this in 2022. I don't doubt that, but moving forward, I'm looking forward to the new android blackberry, that's supposed to come out this year, sorry 2021! Now I hope that it gets here before July.
That would be really nice uh. We haven't got any updates from onward mobility to give us any indication of when, but CES is just around the corner, if you're watching this in the future. Hopefully we know something about it already, but this one I think, we're still going to see security updates. I think that the software team is back in gear with blackberry to push these out. I don't know if it's been because of some influence on the carriers- or I don't know- maybe there's required to at this point.
It seems like we weren't getting reliable security updates there for a while and then all of a sudden, the last couple of months they just started showing up again so hopefully the key2 and the key2lu will continue to get those moving forward, and I think, if you're holding on to this phone or even the key2le, I think you're going to be perfectly okay until the new blackberry comes out. Like I said once the new one comes out, I don't really expect to see any more security patches for this. If we do, that's great, maybe they can still do that, but I think that blackberry will be on board with supporting the new phone. This phone again is over two years old. It will be approaching three years by time the new one comes out.
So I'm glad that they've held on this long, I'm glad that they started pushing the patches out again and that's great for us, because our phones are secure. We don't have to worry about that, and it even seems like the battery has held up pretty well. Over time too, I haven't really experienced battery degradation issues. Still last. All day and still works perfectly fine, so if you have concerns about it, and also it supports voice over LTE, so you should still be covered with T-Mobile and the other networks as well, because of course, starting in January 2021 T-Mobile is shutting off phones that don't support voice over LTE.
That means some older blackberry phones. So I think that this is still a very relevant and very important phone until we get the new blackberry device cross, our fingers that will be here sooner than later and continue tapping away on your keyboard, because your blackberry key2 perfectly fine for now. So that's all I've got. I just want to make this video to address the relevancy of the ke2 moving forward into 2021. Still perfectly good still works, just fine hold on to it hold on to your seat, and we'll see what happens as we move forward into the new year, as we start getting new updates and information on the upcoming blackberry with onward mobility.
So again, that's all I've got. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave them down. In the comment section, I will get back with you if you enjoyed the video, please hit the like and the subscribe button and the little notification bell if you want updates when new videos come out and as always thanks for being here, I appreciate you watching, and I'll see you guys next time.
