Why iPad Pro 2018 is Still My Favorite iPad in Early 2021

What's going on everyone, my name is Aaron, and this is dab. o. Today. I wanted to do a video about why the 11-inch iPad Pro third generation. The one from 2018 is still my favorite iPad today and just for reference. I have owned the latest iPad Pro, the one from early 2020, the fourth generation and the latest generation iPad Air that came out in late 2020, and I mentioned that because, if you're looking for a pro level, 11 iPad, you're, probably looking at one of these three now I got the iPad Pro third gen when it was released back in november 2018 and since then I've been using it pretty much daily for the last two years, and there has been nothing that I've thrown at this, that it can't handle.

But still when apple announced the new iPad Pro earlier this year and then the iPad Air that came later this year. I was intrigued, and I was wondering how it compared to this two-year-old tech and that's kind of the reason for this video, because it is for people that want to buy a new pro level device. But it is also for people that might own the iPad Pro third generation and are wondering, should I upgrade to the latest iPad Pro or even to the iPad Air because of its latest processor, the a14. But first, let's talk about what I'm still loving about this iPad Pro over two years. Later, first, is the display.

The display is just gorgeous on this iPad Pro. It is the liquid retina display with pro motion, that's the 120 hertz, refresh rate and true tone, and it's the same display that's on the current iPad Pro of 2020, which means that this display is still the best display that you can get on an iPad. Currently, second, is the performance. This thing still flies through any task that I put it through multitasking gaming, even 4k, video editing. This thing has no problem handling it all over two years later, and this is something that really worried me because after two years devices start to show their age a little, they start to slow down.

They get a little sluggish, but not this iPad Pro from 2018 the a12 x. Chip still flies through all the tasks that I put it through. Another is the durability. Now I know that a lot of people out there said that these iPad pros bend easily. However, I haven't noticed that in my usage again, I've used this almost every day for the last two years.

It's still in great condition, that's also with a two-year-old that loves to play with father's iPad and, let's just say, she's, not quite as gentle with it. As I am and last thing I'll mention is the design. This still feels like a new 20 20, 20 21, designed to me, and maybe because they haven't updated it practically at all since 2018, but it's still got that all screen display slim bezels, face id USB c on the bottom, really nice speakers, it's nice and thin, and it's nice and lightweight it just feels super premium. So now that I've covered those things that I'm still loving about this, let's talk about the competition that's out there. First, is the latest iPad Pro from 2020 that I bought a little earlier this year and like a lot of other YouTubers out there, when I compared the latest iPad Pro to my iPad Pro third generation, I just didn't feel like there was enough difference or enough upgrade to justify the cost.

In a nutshell, the biggest differences between the newest iPad Pro and the third generation is the camera module. You get an ultra-wide camera lens on it, and you also get the LIDAR sensor. You get the a12z processor compared to the a12x, and you get six gigs of ram rather than four gigs on the third generation. For me personally, I didn't see a huge performance increase between the a12x and the a12z processor, or the two gigs of ram that you get extra on the 2020 iPad Pro and that's because the only real difference between the a12x and the a12z is that the a12z bionics GPU contains one more active core than the a12x, and this just leads to incredibly similar performance, even in geek bench scores, they're, almost identical now. Theoretically, with that extra active core and its GPU, the a12z should be a little better at graphically intense tasks.

But again in my testing and in my day-to-day usage, I didn't notice any performance increase when it comes to the camera module. I am just fine with the 12 megapixel camera on the back of my iPad Pro third generation, it's actually a very, very good camera, and I just don't take enough pictures to where I would need an ultra-wide lens on the back of my iPad Pro, and I also just didn't feel like I needed the LIDAR scanner either. Yes, I think it's cool, and it's great for AR apps, but I personally don't use a ton of AR and when I do, I think the iPad Pro third generation works. Just fine, it's not going to scan a room as quickly as the latest iPad Pro, and it's not going to be quite as accurate when it comes to depth sensing, but it still works great in my opinion. So unless you use really intensive AR apps for maybe engineering or something along that lines, I just don't see a huge need to upgrade now the other option out there is the new iPad Air of 2020, with its improved design.

Actually, the design is incredibly similar to this 2018 iPad Pro, even though that this doesn't have the word pro and its name, it's essentially a pro device, and that's because it has the newest processor, the a14 bionic in it, and that's what really intrigued me about the 2020 iPad Air is that you have essentially the same design or very close to the 2018 iPad Pro, which I really loved, and then you get this brand new state-of-the-art processor inside it that should theoretically be faster. However, after I bought the air, I wasn't expecting how much I would actually miss pro motion and face ID now. Promotion is obviously huge for people that love to draw, and that are artists, but it helps so much in just day-to-day tasks too, for instance just surfing the web and as you scroll things load up and are much clearer faster as you scroll, it doesn't have quite the blur or the ghosting. That goes on. It's just much more pleasing to the eye, and it actually makes your iPad feel like it's a lot faster, and it was the same kind of scenario with face ID.

Where I didn't know, I would miss it until it was gone now. Touch ID does work great on the new iPad Air and I love that they moved it to the power button, but there's just something a little more convenient about using your face to log into your tablet and to pay for things, and again I didn't notice a huge increase in performance between the a12 x and the a14 bionic. It was only when I put them side by side that I could see that the a14 was loading up apps, maybe about a half a second faster in most occasions. But again, if I didn't have them side by side and just using my daily tasks, I really didn't notice that much of a speed increase- and this may sound nitpick, but I'm going to mention it anyway. After using my iPad Pro 11 inches for the last two years, I did notice the slightly bigger bezels on the new iPad Air, which makes it 10.9-inch screen, not 11. So, in my opinion, the trade-off for losing face I'd pro motion display and a slightly bigger display wasn't justified with the slight performance increase that I noticed in the a14 bionic over the a12x.

One thing I do want to note- and that might be a big deal to some- is that both the latest 2020 iPad Pro and the 2020 iPad Air support Wi-Fi six. So if you have a Wi-Fi six routers, you can get faster speeds and farther coverage with the iPad Pro and the iPad Air. But again this is something you really have to consider. If it's a huge feature for you, for instance, do you even have a Wi-Fi, 6 routers? And if you do, is that slight bump in Wi-Fi speed and coverage really a big issue for you, because with my iPad Pro third generation, I can still get 350, sometimes over 400 download speeds and upload speeds over Wi-Fi with my fiber internet. So again, what this all boils down to is, I just don't see a huge reason to upgrade if you have the iPad Pro third generation right now.

This thing is still a beast when it comes to processing performance, multitasking gaming and the display is still as good as any display on any iPad out there right now and that's for people that already have this device and are thinking about upgrading. But if you don't have any device- and you want to buy this, I would highly recommend buying this either refurbished or gently used. You can buy this refurbished directly from apple for 550 right now. As of this review, or you can go one bay and find them gently used for under 500 bucks, and that's where this becomes a really great buy because buying this brand new. I can't really recommend paying the retail price that they're currently asking for this device, because it's two years old now and because we just don't know what's coming in the future, there are reports of a mini, LED display iPad Pro coming in early 2021.

So it doesn't make any sense to spend seven eight hundred dollars on an iPad Pro from 2018 when the new one that comes out in 2021 might only be a hundred dollars or so more and if it does have mini led, it would have a very, very nice display comparable to an OLED display, and it might be enough to get me to upgrade for my 2018 iPad Pro. But again, that's just rumored and reported at this point. So until that thing is on the market and in my hands I still think the 2018 iPad Pro is my favorite iPad of all time, and while I haven't found anywhere that says how long apple will support this with software updates apple tends to support their iPads for at least five years. If not longer so you can expect to get software updates through 2023. Also, you can use all the latest iPad accessories with this iPad Pro from 2018.

You can use the latest Apple Pencil, and you can use the latest iPad Pro magic keyboard that came out in 2020. So, like I said, I'm still loving this 2018 iPad Pro and even with all the newer ones that are on the market. Now I still like this one, the most so until that mini led one hits the market. I still think that this is the best one for the price, all right, guys, I'm going to wrap this up.
