Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 vs Flip 3 - Which should you Buy?

- The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Flip 3 have just been officially announced. I've had some early hands-on time with both and this is everything that you need to know. This video is sponsored by Huel Ready-to-drink. Stay tuned for more information. What's up guys, Saf on SuperSaf TV. And although both devices are foldable devices, they are quite different.

And hopefully by the end of this video, you'll know which one may be right for you. Now, disclaimer, I do say Z Fold, not Z, and that's because I'm British, so just deal with it. Although, I'll pretty much just be referring to these as the Fold 3 and the Flip 3 going forward. Right, so the Flip 3 is pretty much a smartphone that folds in half, whereas the Fold 3 is a smartphone which opens up into a tablet with a very large display. So quite different.

Some people are on the Fold side, some people are on the Flip side, which one are you? So if we start off with the built-in design, there are lots of improvements here. We do have what Samsung call armor aluminum. So this is around 10% stronger aluminum compared to what we've had in previous years. The foldable displays also have a new protective film which is supposed to be 80% more durable compared to last year. And most importantly, both devices now have IPX8 water resistance.

Now this is brilliant because if you are using your device out in the rain, you get a bit of water on it, you're not going to have to worry about it breaking. And from the durability side of things this has been a big, big improvement to what we've seen previously. These are the first foldable devices in the world that have an IPX8 rating. Now, during the hands-on time I couldn't actually get some water on the sample units, they didn't let me, but I'll definitely be doing some tests as soon as I've got the retail units in hand. Now for the colors, we do get three color options on the Fold 3, and we have a matte finish across the board which looks really nice in my opinion.

On the Flip, we have four official color options. One of which is matte, the black version, but the others are glossy. Now, I definitely prefer the matte here again. And there are some additional color options available exclusively from Samsung. Now in terms of the size and dimensions, of course, the Fold is the much larger device, it also weighs quite a bit more because it turns into a tablet.

The Flip 3 is a lot more compact, so that might be something that goes towards your decision. Now let's look at one of the most important things, and that is the displays. So we've got AMOLED displays across the board and both devices have two displays each. So, the Flip 3 has a 1.9 inch cover display, which is still quite small, but it's a lot bigger compared to what we had on the original flip. So if you want to use the display as a viewfinder for the cameras, then you can do that.

You can have lots of different widgets on here as well, such as controls to your musics, your notifications. Now, on the other hand, the Fold too has a much larger 6.2 inch cover display. You can pretty much use the Fold closed with that cover display, you never even have to open it. I mean, if you don't ever open it, that's going to be a real waste, but you can do that. It's a fully usable display.

And this year it has an adaptive 120 Hertz refresh rate which makes things a lot smoother. Last year on the cover display for the Fold 2, we only had 60 Hertz. So this is a big improvement. However, in terms of the size and the bezels and the punch out, it looks pretty much the same as what we had on the Fold 2. Now, the real magic that we get on these devices is when we actually fold them open.

So the Flip 3 when it is folded open has a 6.7 inch display. This has an adaptive 120 Hertz refresh rate. Now we had 60 Hertz on the Flip 1, so things are going to be much smoother, and this is definitely a welcomed upgrade. The Fold 3 has a massive 7.6 inch main fold out display. Now, although the size difference might not seem much in terms of the actual specifications, because of the different aspect ratio you are getting a lot more real estate which is going to be absolutely great for multitasking.

Now this also has an adaptive 120 Hertz refresh rate, and it is 29% brighter compared to what we had on the Fold 2. And the most exciting thing is the fact that this foldable display is now uninterrupted. So we don't have a punch out, we don't have a cutout, it is fully immersive. And that's because Samsung has managed to get an under display camera. Now before we continue, I am super hungry.

How convenient. Let's take a quick break to thank our sponsor for this video, Huel. Now, I've personally been a Huel customer before I worked with them, and I absolutely love the Huel Ready-to-drink. Before, if I'd be having a busy day at the studio, I'd usually end up ordering takeout for lunch which is not only unhealthy but also super expensive. With Huel Ready-to-drink, I don't need to do that.

I can have a delicious and convenient meal in a handy bottle which I can take with me anywhere. It's packed with 26 essential vitamins and minerals, it's high in protein, low in sugar and salt, and it's made with 100% plant-based ingredients which makes this perfect for pretty much all dietary requirements. Huel Ready-to-drink is available in four different flavors. My personal favorite is the banana. It tastes so, so good.

Who says you can't have a healthy treat. If you want to try Huel Ready-to-drink for yourself, then you can actually get free delivery as well as a free Huel T-shirt using the link in the description below. Also let me know which flavor you went for. I'm going to stick with the banana for now. - You've got a little something.

- Did I get it? - Yeah, you got it. - Cool. Now this under display camera is just four megapixels. So, resolution wise, it's not so high. And I did try to do some comparisons versus the 10 megapixel selfie camera which is on the cover display.

And you can clearly see that you're going to get much more crisp images from the cover display on the Fold 3 compared to this under display camera. However, this does give you an immersive experience. And the thinking behind it is that when you do have the device folded out, you'll be using the front facing camera for conference calling and you can have 1080p video, but when you do want to take selfies or when you want to vlog, then you can actually use the cover display which has a punch-out with the 10 megapixel selfie camera. This is pretty much the same as the 10 megapixel selfie punch-out camera that we have on the Flip 3, but what's great about both these devices is that you can actually use the rear facing cameras for selfies and use the cover displays as viewfinders. This means that you'll not only be able to use a better quality primary camera for your selfies, but you'll also be able to use the ultra wide camera and you can get lots more people into your shots.

This is something that I definitely do like. Now moving on to the rear facing cameras, we do have a triple rear-facing camera sets up on the Fold 3, we have a dual rear-facing camera sets up on the Flip 3. So, we do have 12 megapixels across the board and both devices do have pretty much the same ultrawide camera, same angle of view as well. The primary cameras are slightly different, but not by a huge deal. And then the Fold 3 does get the advantage of a two times optical zoom camera.

Now, as far as I know, the hardware for these cameras is pretty much the same as what we had last year. However, the glass used to cover the lenses is actually super clear glass and that's Gorilla glass with DX, which is supposed to give you cleaner images. But more importantly, we do have improvements for the software processing and also the ISP. The ISP is an Image Signal Processor which comes as part of the chip set. And the Fold 3 as well as the Flip 3, both are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G chip set.

We've got this across the board. Usually Samsung has a Qualcomm chip in certain regions and then an Exynos chip in other regions, but for the Fold and the Flip, we do have the 888 across the board. Now the 888 is the flagship chip set this year. It's very capable, very fast. And both of these devices are going to be absolutely great for performance.

However, you do get 50% more RAM on the Fold 3 compared to the Flip 3, and this is really going to help towards multitasking. And that's what the Fold 3 is really about, being able to have lots of apps open at the same time. And the software is going to help towards this. So both devices do have Android with Samsung's OneUI on top, and we do have some specific features for both the devices. So the Fold 3 in particular, we have improved split view, and now you can use multi-window across all apps, and a lot of the apps have now also been optimized, in particular Instagram I'm told.

And this is a big problem that I had with my Fold 2. Instagram Stories would just kind of chop things off for other people's stories. And when I would post them, they'd look fine on my Fold, but as soon as somebody else saw them, then they'd have things cut off. So hopefully these things will be improved. Now you can use both devices partially folded.

So if you want to kind of sit them down somewhere to take a photo or something, or for instance on the Flip if you're watching a video, you can have the video playing on one side and on the bottom side you can kind of scroll through and browse other videos or browse through comments and things, which is definitely good. And in terms of some of the other features, both devices do have a side mounted fingerprint scanner, and they both also have Stereo speakers. And one feature that the Fold 3 has which the Flip 3 does not is support for the S Pen. Now, Samsung actually had a giant S Pen on display at the briefing area. I'm not saying they got the idea from me, but you just need to look at some of these thumbnails.

(bright music) But anyway, the Fold 3 having S Pen support is absolutely awesome, especially considering the fact that we're not going to be getting a new Note series device this year. Anyway, I've covered this in a previous video, I'll link that in the cards under the description. So the Fold 3 does not come with an S Pen included, you will have to buy this separately. And it is compatible with two different types of S Pen's. The first is a Fold edition S Pen which is specifically for the Fold.

And then it's also compatible with the S Pen Pro. Now testing up the S Pen Pro, it's obviously much larger, but it has a switch at the top which lets you go to the Fold. And I believe what it does is when you are in the Fold mode, then it is a bit more retractable, the nib, so it's not going to be pushing down as hard. Latency for the S Pen's is around 2.8 milliseconds, I'm told, which is very, very fast. And in my brief testing, it was very smooth.

Definitely a welcomed addition to the Fold series. Now one thing you're going to have to keep in mind is that unlike the Note series, there is no space within the body of the Fold to keep an S Pen. So, if you do buy an S Pen, it's either going to be completely separate or you'll have to buy it with a case that has an enclosure for the S Pen. I did get a chance to try out this case. And although this is pretty good overall, it does add more bulk to an already bulky phone which is the Fold 3.

So, definitely something to keep in mind. And moving on to the batteries. Both devices actually have batteries split across the body of the devices because they are foldables. And the fold 3 as expected does have a larger capacity compared to the Flip 3. Now, in terms of usage and battery life, I'm obviously going to have to spend more time with these and I will be covering battery life in the full review when that's available, make sure you've subscribed and hit that bell icon so you don't miss that coverage.

But generally speaking, the Fold 2 and the Flip 1 did give me good overall battery life. We'll see how they perform with the higher refresh rate displays. For charging, we do have up to 25 Watts of wired charging on the Fold 3. On the Flip 3, it's only up to 15 Watts. Now, neither of the devices come with a charger included out of the box, which was, I guess expected.

A moment of silence for chargers included in the box. Lets have a bit of a flashback. Anyway, anyway, neither of these come with a charger included out of the box. However, both do support wireless charging out at around 10 Watts, and both also have reverse wireless charging wireless power share, so you will be able to use them to charge other devices wirelessly. Now finally, let's look at pricing.

Interestingly, the Flip 3, in my opinion, actually comes at a very competitive 950 pounds or $999. So, this is the first time we've seen a foldable under the thousand pound, thousand dollar mark. And just for 50 pounds more, you will be able to double the storage. The Fold 3 does come in higher, so it's coming in at around 1600 pounds or $1,800 for the 256 gigabyte option. Now, that is a high price, no doubt, but if we compare it to last year's Fold, it has been reduced, and both devices are available for pre-order right now.

And they will be coming into stores on the 27th of August. And that is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 versus the Z Fold 3. I'm a huge fan of foldable devices, and it's great to see how far they've come. In terms of my opinions, I'm still leaning a bit more towards the Fold because I think it gives you more. You can have a regular-sized smartphone, be it a little bit thicker, and it can open up into a full-sized tablet, which in my opinion is a lot more useful compared to the Flip which is very cool, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't really add too much in the way of benefits.

But the best thing about Flip is the price that it's coming in at. Now, in my opinion, it becomes a lot more accessible to a lot more people because you can now choose between either going for a foldable device or a regular flagship. And that's something that I think will make it a lot more compelling and reach a lot more people. That's what I think anyway. What do you guys think? Do drop me a comment below and let me know your thoughts.

I hope you enjoyed this video and found it useful, if you did, then do smash that like button for me.
