Compared: iPad Pro (2017) VS iPad Pro (2020) By AppleInsider

Welcome everyone- it is Andrew here from Apple Insider, and today we're talking about the 20/20 iPad Pro, but this time we're gonna, compare it against the 2017 iPad pros. That's right. We have the ten and a half inch versus eleven-inch iPad Pro and our new twelve point. Nine inches versus the 2017 twelve point: nine-inch iPad Pro, so we're going to break these things down. Look at the design, differences in performance, differences between the 2017 models and the brand-new 2020s. Let's go ahead and just dive into it.

First, we're going to give you a general breakdown between the 2017 models and the 2020 models just going to have respect and performance differences, and then we're to get into the specifics on the smaller ten and a half versus 11 and the twelve point, nine versus twelve point: nine starting off with the design itself. Now the 2018 model got a redesign and the 2020 models stuck with that. Has the squared off edges around the side that liquid Retina display in the center, which does cut down on reflections compared to the 2017 model, but all that has held over only inside we're going from the 10x fusion to the new, a 12 Z Bionic processor? So what does that mean in terms of performance? Well, we ran the Geek bench 5.1 test on both units. When it comes to the GPM CPU test, we got a 7 to 54 and a 20 to 22 for the single and multi-core test on the 17 iPad Pro looking at the 20/20 I've had pros. We earned an 11 17 for the single core in a 46 94, the multi-core, so we're going 754 to 11, 17 and 22 22 to 46 90.

That's a pretty big jump between generations. We then turned to the graphics to do to compute Geek bench test and on the 2017 iPad Pro we earned a 65 81, which jumps between 90 and 896 on the brand-new models. That is a huge jump that is a 50% gain roughly from the 2017 to the 2020 iPad pros. So, what's contributing to those, especially on that multi-core test, when we go up to the 20/20 iPad pros, it is an eight core design in six gigs of ram, so you're definitely makes a difference in those performance benchmarks, as well as opening tabs or opening a lot of tabs in Safari Allah, open windows, a lot of memory. Intensive tasks are going to be better suited for the 20/20 iPad pros versus the 2017, so huge performance gains from the 2017 to the 20/20 iPad Pro.

So a big difference between the 2020 and the 2017 iPad pros is also going to be the cameras. So looking at a 2017 and a 20/20 iPad Pro, you can instantly see the difference. The 2017 model only has a single camera on the back. That is a 12 megapixel camera sitting there. Next to the true tone flash on the newer 20/20 I pad pros, we have three different lenses going on here.

We have the 12 megapixel wide-angle lens, then a 10 megapixel ultra-wide lens camera, and then we have the LIDAR scanner. So, there's a lot more going on the camera bump on the 20/20 iPad pros, the LIDAR scanner isn't necessarily a camera. It's used for more augmented reality and other mixed reality features, but it's going to be a very cool device. That's going to come into play with things like the measure app, which are far more accurate on the updated iPads than the old ones. While we're talking about cameras a couple other things, there are five studio-quality microphones on the updated iPads and only two microphones on the 2017 iPads and those updated cameras on the 20/20 iPad Pro are capable of shooting 4k video at 24, 30 and 60 frames per second 2017 was only capable of 30, and it can shoot a slo-mo video at 240 frames per second at 1080p, whereas the previous s, 2017 generation, could only shoot 240 frames per second in slo-mo at 720p and 1080p was capped at 120 frames per second moving, along with substantial differences.

Obviously we're going between face ID on the new models and touch ID here on the older generation 2017 miles. So that's a definite improvement. I love face ID. It's so much easier to get into, especially on my iPad web works, both in portrait and landscape orientation. It is very fast to get into and because that true depth camera system, it enables portrait mode selfies, where's, the previous 7 7 megapixel camera on the 17.

Just does not do port remotes you're just left with regular photos. They don't look all that great. So the portrait mode effect is definitely preferred on the updated model, as well as the stronger authentication. We're also going from a lightning to USB, see, so lightning on the 17 2020 model has USB Con. There allows you to plug in hubs and adapters as well as microphones a hard drive really anything over USB see.

You can now connect to iPad Pro it's great to have around one thing that the iPad Pro 2020 doesn't have, though, is a headphone jack is completely absent on there and that is still retained on the 17, so 2017 I'll still have the headphone jack hanging around on top. Another minor difference between the two is that the new models start out with 128 gigs of internal storage instead of 64, and they can be upgraded to a whole terabyte in there, whereas the 2017 iPad Pro's started at 64 and could only go up to 512. Now, let's look at the specific sizes next to each other, so we have 10 and a half inch iPad Pro versus the 11-inch iPad Pro. Now you pretty much have seen this stuff before if you've seen the 2017 versus 2018, but just to show it off again. These tablets are pretty much the same size, they're very close to one another.

It is just a hair smaller for the 20/20. You can see how it overhangs just a little the older model there, but you're getting a larger screen size because that's the edge to edge liquid Retina display. So from the front. It's a drastic difference. You're getting an extra half inch of screen size there on the 20/20 iPad pros versus the square rectangular screen of the 2017 iPad pros.

So really nice change there in terms of more screen in pretty much the same size when we get to the 12 point, 9 inch model the difference as you and Laura drastic. Obviously, Apple didn't take the same size device and increase the screen like it did with the 11-inch going from 10 and 1/2 to 11. It kept the same size screen. So it's still 12 point 9 inches on the old 2017 and on the 20/20. What Apple did was they just reduced those bezels by a ton, so it reduced the entire overall size of the tablet.

So if we stack these on top of one another, you can see how much a difference there is just of that previous tablet. Just sticking out on both the side here and on the top. It's a huge difference. It makes that twelve point nine inch model, far more portable and far more convenient to use the older one, just felt a little heavier in your hand, a little just bigger and bulkier you're, getting a substantial size difference going for that 2017 to the 2020. So I really love how they've changed from the 2017 to 2018 and again here in the 2020, so that about sums it up.

Those are the biggest differences between the 2017 iPad pros and the 20/20 iPad pros they're, both incredible lines of tablets, but there's a lot of improvements on the 2018 and 2020 models over those 2017.
