Apple's MagSafe Leather Sleeve for iPhone 12! Is it Worth It?! By AppleInsider

Welcome everyone to apple insider- it is Andrew here, and it seems that apple and FedEx had a different plan for my day, because I was really hoping around these holidays to catch up on some text, reviews for all of you, people out there, but instead I'm going to be checking out apple's new leather sleeve, it's leather, MagSafe sleeve for the iPhone 12 line. So these cases just went on sale, and they just started arriving in customers hands. They are available in several colors, all leather for the iPhone 12 mini the iPhone 12 and 12 pro. Those two are the same size and the iPhone 12 Pro max. So three different sizes of these guys for all four of the new iPhone 12 models, several colors all made out of leather. So this thing again it just started shipping.

It just went on sale. So, even though I was hoping to get some other stuff done, I really wanted to show you this thing right away. So let's go ahead and dive into it: apple's leather sleeve for the iPhone 12 line. So there are a few things that we need to talk about with the leather sleeve, there's kind of a lot of stuff going on, for what would normally be such a typically simple product. We've seen a lot of leather sleeves for iPhones in the past.

Apple's, not the first one to do this, but apple's leather sleeve is different because of that integration with MagSafe. So a few things we're going to talk about we're going to talk about being able to use this while your phone is inside we're going to talk about the card slots to use this thing as a wallet we're talking about what mag safe does uh in the little window there on the front now, in this case, I've got it here, the first one that shipped was this color here, which would be pink citrus. I used to know these colors off the top of my head and there's been a lot of cases now. So I'm getting lazy but pink citrus is what we're looking at here, and it came from my iPhone 12 mini. But again it comes for all the sizes of the new phone.

So you aren't limited to just the mini or just the max anything like that. So in the box you have the sleeve itself, then you have an additional little strap. So we've got all those guys here and of course, I've got my iPhone 12 mini. So the first thing is the fact that this does protect your phone. It's going to cover pretty much every angle of your device.

There is a little bobble here on the back where the camera modules go. So we can take out this little insert, which basically says how to use it as a wallet, but in this case we're going to slide our phone in first gonna. Lock it locks, it would be good slide our phone in there we go. That's what we wanted to see right there right. We take that again due to getting closer for the camera wow.

That is really cool. Okay, so we're gonna. Take this out when it slides in the camera. Bum is gonna kind of help, keep it in place to the perfect spot to align, but then you're going to hear that little MagSafe sound, and then you can see the clock changes. Yeah, that's a really nice little effect.

The background gets nice and dark, and the numbers there on the clock match what the case is and every time you pick up the case, so you're going to set it down that little screen part is gonna, go off, and just curiously yes for anyone who is wondering the rest of the screen is actually that same, dark color, so Apple doesn't just light up the numbers here at the top. The whole screen is that dark background color with a time there. So it's off right now. If we pick it up, you can see there's the time, so it makes it a little easy, as you pick up this thing to show you the time. Through the case, you don't actually have to take your phone out of here.

Additionally, uh I wouldn't be able to see if we can actually just tap through here, so it is big enough to fit your finger. So if you have this sitting down on the table already, you can just tap on where that cutout is. That will also wake up your screen. So you can see what timing. So that's the first thing.

Second of all, there is a speaker cut out there at the top. The speaker, cutout means you can take phone calls with your phone inside here. So that's very handy as well. If you do have to take a phone call, you can still hold your leather sleeve up to your ear. The bottom is open, so the microphone and speakers down there, okay and your speaker for your ear- is also exposed so easy to take phone calls with that leather sleeve.

On your case, does that look cool? It looks cool okay. The other feature that I want to highlight is that this can actually be used as a wallet so inside this front flap, if you lift it up, which is how apple directly to lift that front flip, you can insert your cards so your Apple Card, your ID, I believe about three cards can fit in here. Two is pretty tight, but I would believe a third one may fit it's not terribly tight, so you can fit two cards in there as well as your phone, so you've got your phone. You've got your wallet all together in this one package. Now you can use the sleeve on its own just as a sleeve, or you can use it with this little lanyard.

I'm not sure what you want to call this, but it's basically just turns your phone into like a wrist let with this guy, you put the long one I mean on this. Like white background, you put the long one in first the part that goes around your wrist. That goes and then the second one. It's almost got like a magnet or something, but that securely locks it. So then, look at this look at this got your phone.

Your wallet keep them on your wrist as you go around now. I know that's more feminine, but it's still a really cool way to be able to hold on to these things. Obviously we're using a pinkish color here, but there are brown ones. That would look a little more masculine. If you want to just use it as kind of like a security tether for your phone in the back, so put this on the side of your bag and be able to slip your phone in and out add just another little of storage, a wallet all the way there uh to clip on the side of your bag now.

Lastly, lastly, things talk about this is MagSafe, so MagSafe is what enables that nice little feature when you're sliding your phone into the case and the screen animates all that it's lovely. So that's what that's doing there, but this will also work with MagSafe accessories. So it's like mag save charger this plops on the back boom. Just like that, so you can charge your phone using the MagSafe charger. MagSafe docks anything like that, the supporting MagSafe that clips on there nice and secure.

We also wanted to check if it would work with the additional MagSafe wallet, which I just find curious because there is a wall on the inside, and it does technically attach the back here, so it does hold on. But I will say it's not as strong. I would not do this myself. I think this is just too weak compared to how strong the magnet is on the other ones. This does not hold on quite enough.

So yes, it kind of still works with the MagSafe wallet, but I think that's, why apple put those card slots on the inside, so you don't have to worry about attaching the mac staple onto the back of this. It technically does work, and you could probably use other accessories, but it's just not strong enough uh in my opinion. So just so you know whether you can use that with apple's leather sleeve for the iPhone 12s. So here's another really cool effect. Since your phone knows that it's in this sleeve it can direct different information there.

So, for example, if we wanted to plug our phone in or use MagSafe connect that boom, we see our charging percentage, how much the battery's full and that charging icon right there. So it makes it very clear that your phone is actively charging, even though you can't see the screen that is on the inside, so that is it that is apple's leather sleeves for the iPhone 12 line. This is a pretty nifty accessory. The leather feels great the way that they've done all the little touches like the clip or the snap for the wrist let strap thing. It's very nice.

I love the animation of when you're putting this in and the fact that it can change the background and the clock to match the color of the case. The sleeve that you're accessorizing with that you can take a phone call through here and after about taking your phone out all very nice, the fact that it works with MagSafe, of course, whether you're using the wallet or just the MagSafe charger, is super handy and, of course, the fact that you can tuck in a few cards there at the front and keep those with you at all times. That makes this a great going out package great for trips or a night on the town. Anything like that. I can see these being very popular, and I can see a lot of knockoffs hitting the market pretty soon as well.
